The NRL’s Dally M Awards saw plenty of big names from around the league elect to stay home and watch on from the couch.

In what is the night of nights for rugby league, it wasn’t just superstar players who shunned the night as a host of the top coaches steered clear.

Wayne Bennett, Craig Bellamy and Trent Robinson were three of the leading men who opted to remain home and avoid the Dally M’s.

But it was the omission of Latrell Mitchell that raised eyebrows.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs star took out the Ken Stephen medal for community work but was nowhere to be seen on the night.

While other absent award winners provided a video to be played on the night, it was crickets from Mitchell.

Fans watching on weren’t happy with the star’s apparent snub, but the reason behind why he didn’t appear has now been revealed.

Mitchell sent a video into the NRL, but the file was in the wrong format and the quality wasn’t up to broadcast standard, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Kalyn Ponga claimed the top honour in a shock count as he pipped hot favourite Shaun Johnson by a single vote.

The Newcastle Knights star however admitted on Thursday the league may have had an extremely awkward situation on its hands during the ceremony.

The reason? Ponga really didn’t want to go to the awards night.

And it wasn’t just a momentary lack of interest or enthusiasm, the 25-year-old actually contacted the league to clearly state he did not want to go.

“I wasn’t going to go to the Dally M’s, to be honest,” Ponga said on 2DAY FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin radio show.

“I actually sent the NRL an email that morning to say that I just don’t want to go.

“I’ve been in the media a lot the last few years, I just wanted to sit back and watch it at home and they said that I had to go.”
