Jaytex Constructions awarded $1.4m tender as part of Richardson Park revitalisation

A $1.4m tender has been awarded to a local company as part of the $1.4m revitalisation of a beloved sporting ground, as its reopening date has been set.

A local Territory business has been awarded a $1.4m construction tender to enhance facilities at a beloved Top End sporting ground.

Jaytex Constructions have been awarded the tender for the next stage in the Richardson Park revitalisation project as it continues to near completion.

The park was the former home of Territory rugby league, and it was parts of that community who fought to keep it open ahead of its demolishment in 2020.

The works include building ablutions facilities, change rooms, storage and undercover areas as well as exercise and playground equipment for the local community to enjoy.

This is the next milestone from the $7.1m investment to revitalise the ground, following the opening of vehicle access to Ludmilla School from Richardson Drive in April.

The Warren ‘Shadow’ Mount memorial was preserved and reinstated in a prominent position on the grounds to acknowledge the lengthy history between rugby league and the location.

The new public open space will feature covered picnic shelters with 340 new trees and shrubs planted to provide shaded area across the site.

The opening of the playing field is scheduled for July, with the remaining elements to be completed in late 2024.

The project was pushed back by up to a year in 2022 when it was found asbestos had been dumped at the 550sqm site.

Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics minister Joel Bowden said the revitalisation would enhance a much loved space for the Darwin community.

“Richardson Park is a significant and much-loved space for the local and wider Darwin community with the revitalisation works set to enhance and activate the area,” he said.

“The first steps are complete with new road access to Ludmilla School welcomed by local families and the school community.

“The various construction works will create work for 48 local Territorians, including four apprentices, and I look forward to seeing these new amenities progress over the coming months.”
