Elijah Taylor’s brutal critique of Broncos coach Michael Maguire liked by Brisbane player Marty Taupau

A former Test star who played under Michael Maguire at Wests Tigers posted a brutal assessment of the Broncos coach’s methods, which was endorsed by a current Brisbane player.

Brisbane prop Martin Taupau is on a collision course with Michael Maguire after endorsing a social media post that slams the Broncos coach’s training methods.

Former New Zealand Test forward Elijah Taylor has taken to Instagram to deliver his critique of Maguire’s Broncos after being asked by fans for his thoughts on Brisbane’s current form.

Taylor listed three key reasons for Brisbane’s patchy form before giving insights into Maguire’s “intensity”, which he believes pushes players to breaking point.

In a move that will capture the attention of Broncos bosses, the post was liked by Taupau.

Maguire put the Broncos through a punishing pre-season and Taupau felt the full force of it, almost collapsing at training running in 30 degree heat on day one in November.

Maguire has been buffeted by speculation of player unrest but the Broncos coach is adamant Brisbane need to work harder to snap their 19-year title drought.

Taupau is off-contract at season’s end and the 35-year-old is seemingly headed for the Red Hill exits based on his support of Taylor’s stinging analysis.

Taylor, now 35, had a successful 10-year career, playing 11 Tests for the Kiwis and 186 NRL games for the Warriors, Penrith and Wests Tigers, where he was coached by Maguire.

“A lot of people are asking me what’s wrong with ‘Madge’ (Maguire), what’s wrong with the Broncos,” Taylor said in a video post.

“One, his intensity. I’ve never seen a coach ride the game so hard.

“After a win, the world is a better place.

“After a loss, you’re off to a funeral and someone will be getting cooked at the video session.

“Two, training methods. Ninety-five per cent of the time on the field it’s full contact.

“The hardest pre-season I have ever done is with Michael Maguire.

“You haven’t done an NRL pre-season until you have done a Michael Maguire pre-season.

“Three, time efficiency. Let’s have a meeting for a meeting for a meeting. I’d get home from training and the kids don’t know who I am anymore.

“Hardly home.”

Taylor claims he often went into NRL games feeling physically fatigued from training and dreading an 80-minute game.

He believes Maguire has the roster to get success at the Broncos, but urged him to adjust his training methods.

“Nothing worse than running out for game-day warm up and you are sore,” he said.

“I’m about to play an 80-minute game and my body feels like this.

“If Madge can clean that up, I’m sure he can turn the Broncos season around.”

“I warned you. Good luck.”
