The NRL is investigating Luciano Leilua after the Dragons recruit failed to alert his previous club of a drink driving charge.

On February 7, the former Cowboy was charged with low-level drink driving at Townsville Magistrates Court, where he pleaded guilty, fined $300 and given a one-month driving suspension.

According to The Daily Telegraph, North Queensland were only made aware of the incident that morning when an editor of the Townsville Bulletin notified Cowboys CEO Jeff Reibel.

Leilua recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.052 after being stopped by police on January 21 – 17 days before the Cowboys and NRL knew anything about it.

The lack of disclosure from Leilua is likely to be met with punishment by the NRL considering the strict guidelines the league has in place.

An NRL spokesman has confirmed the Integrity Unit is aware of the matter and investigating.

The Cowboys stood down Leilua from all club activity after he pleaded guilty to the drink driving charge.

The back rower has since signed a deal with the Dragons after requesting a release from the remainder of his contract with the Cowboys.

It has been reported that Cowboys coach Todd Payten was more than willing to let Leilua explore his options in Sydney on the back of failing to disclose the drink driving charge as well as his poor training habits.

On Friday, St. George confirmed they had signed Leilua on a three-year, $1.8 million contract.
