Dally M medal winner Olivia Kernick reacts to missing out on Jillaroos squad

There could be an investigation into the shock Australian snubbing of the NRLW’s best player and she’s spoken for the first time.

ARL urged to investigate Kernick snub

Dally M medal winner Olivia Kernick says it’s “sad” but she knows “what I need to work on” as she reacted to her Jillaroos snub that has sparked an investigation.

Kenrick, who was crowned the NRLW’s player of the year last week before starring in the Sydney Roosters’ premiership win, was a shock omission from the Australian squad announcement for the upcoming Pacific Championships.

Amid calls it was “scandalous” that coach Brad Donald had failed to pick Kernick, who was also among NSW’s best in the inaugural three-match State of Origin series this year, and played for Australia in last year’s post-season Pacific Championships, the Australian Rugby League Commission launched an investigation.

Donald explained his decision by saying that veteran star Kezie Apps was the preferred player in the back-row.

“Liv is probably not too far off, she was on the bench for NSW this year as well and she will be the next one in if something went down,” Donald said on Monday.

“When you’ve got the captain in your position in Kezie Apps, it’s quite difficult. Then the versatility (of) Mahalia as well.”

But as the investigation continues, Kernick, who found out she’d missed the squad while celebrating the premiership win, was not as upset as others.

“You know what? It was sad and I know what I need to work on,” she said on the Upfront podcast hosted by Roosters teammates Millie Elliott and Keeley Davis.

“I was with my teammates and I actually enjoyed the rest of the day. I had a good time.

“Disappointed for myself but so happy for the girls and can’t wait to cheer them on. Obviously would’ve loved to have been in there with you girls.”

Donald said Kernick would be the next player called into the squad should injury strike.

Roosters teammate Elliott, who was recalled to the Jillaroos squad, said she was disappointed it coincided with Kernick’s axing.

“I’m a one-hit wonder, I played one game back in 2019. It’s my first time back in the team, obviously would’ve loved to be in there with you girls,” she said.

The Jillaroos’ opening clash will be against Tonga in Brisbane on October 18.
