MATT Scott wants Cronulla’s dangerous tackling techniques to be formally reviewed to see whether they are worthy of a judiciary charge.
The growing rivalry between the Cowboys and Cronulla became uglier during Saturday night’s tight contest in Townsville.
After their 20-14 Round 1 win, the Cowboys were seething over a series of tackles by the Sharks, who slammed into the knees of players as they were held upright.
The most contentious tackle was by James Maloney, who hit James Tamou below the knees as he was standing up in a tackle. The tackle was penalised and Tamou was left limping.
There were two other instances of a similar nature that were not penalised.
Cannonball tackles are illegal in the NRL because they have led to knee injuries.
“It is pretty dangerous,’’ Scott said.
‘‘It is not what you want to see because you can suffer lower leg injuries like that.
“You think they will have a look at it.
“It is hard to see out there but if they are doing it (cannonball) then it would be nice if (the NRL) had a look at it.’’
The match review panel will likely announce any charges on Monday.
Scott and front-row partner Tamou thrived under the new interchange laws, which have reduced changes to eight.
The Cowboys only used seven, as one was required for Antonio Winterstein who suffered concussion.
Forwards at some clubs, including Parramatta, struggled with the need to play more than 20 minutes straight in the opening round.
It prompted Gorden Tallis to question the mental toughness of the modern prop in his column in The Sunday Mail.
“Today’s players are physically ridiculous,’’ Tallis wrote.
‘‘Sport science has them all looking like they could be on the cover of GQ magazine.
“When it comes to mental toughness, I am not too sure.
‘‘Can they pull through the pain barrier? I’m not too sure.’’
Scott and Tamou, however, were excellent against a strong Sharks pack.
“Our guys in the middle managed well in a tough game in tough conditions,” coach Paul Green said.
“We coped pretty well. With us losing Antonio that cost us an interchange as well.
‘‘We only used seven interchanges.’’
