Brisbane legend Allan Langer can’t be lost to the Broncos over the shock sacking of Kevin Walters

Allan Langer is mulling his future at the Broncos after the shock sacking of Kevin Walters – but a close mate says there are hidden reasons why Brisbane can’t afford to lose the club great.

Madge confirmed as new Broncos coach

Allan Langer’s value to the Broncos is priceless according to one of his favourite teammates who has spoken to the club legend as he mulls over his future.

Langer’s occasional tour room-mate Trevor Gillmeister is hoping the Broncos icon stays at the club despite his distress at the sudden sacking of his life-long mate Kevin Walters as first grade coach last Thursday.

Langer confirmed to this masthead on Sunday he would spend the next few weeks weighing up his future.

Hard-nosed Michael Maguire, a very different character to Walters, will be the new coach. Langer confirmed to the masthead he will weigh up his future over the next few weeks.

“I have spoken to him a few times and he was dirty with what happened to Kevvie and I agreed with him,’’ Gillmeister said.

“I really hope he stays but I can understand why he is so upset and it’s his decision. But they are not the Broncos without Alf. I cannot think of anyone at any other club who represents what Alf does at the Broncos.

“Apart from what he does with the team there’s the marketing stuff that people don’t appreciate. Every time someone sees his face they think of the Broncos. That’s free advertising for the club.

“I could understand if he did move on but I still think for him it could be a case of you don’t know what you have got until it’s gone.

“Hopefully the new coach can have a yak to him and he can make a decision.’’

Gillmeister said Langer’s reputation as a cheeky mood-lightener belied the sharp brain of a four- time premiership captain.

“He is just good to have around. You need those types of people. I know people think he jokes around he also has a very good football brain which often he does not get credit for.

“I remember when we were giving Mal Meninga a hand in (Queensland and Australia) coaching camps we would go back to our rooms and he would point out things to me in games on the television which I just hadn’t noticed.

“That’s why Wayne Bennett tried to get him to the Dolphins. I am biased because I love him to death. We have done a lot together. He is a unique person.’’

Bennett tried to tempt Langer to the Dolphins for their first season but he stayed loyal to the club, partially because of the presence of Walters.
