Angry footy fans want Katy Perry kicked off their TV screen during State of Origin

Not even Cameron Munster annoyed NSW fans as much as Katy Perry did during Queensland’s dramatic Origin win over the Blues.

More footy, less Katy Perry.

That was the message from rugby league fans who on Wednesday night were forced to endure as many cameos from the American pop star as bare backsides from NSW players during Nine’s State of Origin broadcast.

Queensland won the series opener 16-10 and Perry’s repeated appearances on TV screens were as unpopular among viewers as Maroons tries among the 80,000-strong Sydney crowd.

The 37-year-old is fronting a new commercial for food delivery service Menulog and it seemed like she was on the air during every ad break in the footy on Wednesday.

The constant refrain of Menulog’s “Did Somebody Say?” campaign ringing in viewers’ ears was more painful for some than Phil Gould’s commentary of Panthers games back in the day.

In the ad, Perry — who replaced Snoop Dogg as the musical face of the brand — dresses in a variety of colourful, elaborate outfits and spruiks the different cuisines available on Menulog.

Before Origin kicked off, Menulog marketing director Simon Cheng told Mumbrella he was confident Australians would give Perry’s role in the new campaign a thumbs up.

“Katy Perry coming on just provides another dimension and more depth to the strategy we’ve got to build out our audio branding assets,” Cheng said.

“Because we believe that brand is not just visual branding – you know logos and colours, which are very important obviously – we’ve got this strategy to build depth in our branding kit and that includes audio branding as well.

“We’d love to be able to continue to do more iterations and add further depth to the strategy as we move forward.”
