Maverick Vinales blitzed the field on the factory Yamaha to qualify on pole for this afternoon’s Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island.

Vinales continued his hot form all weekend after being quickest in the first three practice sessions and in this morning’s warm-up.

The Spaniard clocked 1min 28.492 sec, a half second from Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo and then world champion Marc Marquez on the factory Honda.

Quartararo recovered after a nasty fall on Friday when he injured his left foot and came through the Q2 session to make the front row.

Valentino Rossi qualified for his 400th grand prix in fourth on the factory Yamaha and will share the second row with Danilo Petrucci (Ducati) and Cal Crutchlow (Honda).

Aussie Jack Miller finished back in ninth and would be slightly disappointed after showing strong form on the Pramac Ducati most of the weekend.

MOTO3

Italian Lorenzo Dalla Porta wrapped up the Moto3 title with a stunning triumph in a typically chaotic race.

The Leopard Racing rider saw off all challengers and only had to stay upright — not always easy in the Moto3 swarm — after Aaron Canet crashed at the first corner of the third lap.

He became the first Italian to win the 125cc/Moto3 title since Andrea Dovizioso in 2004.

Dalla Porta’s teammate Marco Ramirez sneaked through to finish second, with Albert Arenas third.

Australian Remy Gardner finished a fighting sixth place in the Moto2 at Phillip Island.

The 21-year-old started from 13th in the grid, speared through to fifth after just three laps and then battled midway before recovering for a strong finish.

It was Gardner’s fourth-best result of 2019 and his best at the island circuit. The performance comes just two days after his horror highside at Turn 8 on Friday.

KTM duo Brad Binder and Jorge Martin were first across the line, from Thomas Luthi, to keep the title race alive with just two races to go.

Championship leader Alex Marquez was back in eighth and will have to wait another week to try to seal the 2019 title.

Qualifying was held on Sunday morning after strong winds forced the postponement of the qualification sessions.

The weather at the coastal circuit was again cool and cloudy, but the winds are not as gusty as Saturday afternoon.
