Matt Renshaw misses Australia A squad, as teen star Sam Konstas joins Cam Bancroft, Marcus Harris in Test frame

The picture for Australia’s first Test team is becoming clearer – but Queensland’s Matt Renshaw is unlikely to be a part of it. He’s been left out of the Australia A squad announced on Monday.

Matt Renshaw appears out of the running to replace Cameron Green in the Australian Test side with the Queenslander left out of an Australia A squad to face India A beginning later this month.

NSW young gun Sam Konstas has been included in the squad alongside Test discards Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris.

All-rounders Aaron Hardie and Beau Webster will also have the chance to stake their claims, as flagged by this masthead.

But having been in Australia’s Test squad earlier this year for the series against the West Indies and New Zealand, Renshaw has not been in the 17-man squad for the two four-day matches, being held in Mackay and Melbourne respectively that will serve as auditions for the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

A spot has opened in the Aussie Test top six after Green was ruled out for around six months after being sent for back surgery.

Alongside teen Konstas, fellow emerging players Cooper Connolly and Ollie Davies have been included in the squad.

Marcus Stoinis has meanwhile been recalled for what would be his first one-day international in almost a year, named for the three-match series against Pakistan having been dropped for the World Cup semi-final last year.

“We are really excited by this squad, particularly after some of the tremendous performances to start the Sheffield Shield season,” selection chair George Bailey said of the squads for the A series.

“As always with Australia A selection we have picked a side we hope can present performances which are compelling for the upcoming Test summer, whilst also rewarding players for strong domestic form in roles we see as being important further afield.

“Australia A squads are pleasingly challenging to select which highlights the depth and talent coming through to accompany those more senior players on the edge of international recall.

“It will be a great opportunity for these players to shine against a strong Test nation looking to prepare for what is going to be a captivating summer of Test cricket.”
