The Darwin Salties snapped at the opportunity to sign one of the city’s own as their inaugural full-time general manager.

Born and bred Territorian Matt Nason has been chosen to head the NBL1 team’s operations effective immediately as the young club continues their march towards an NBL license.

Salties Chairman Craig Rowston said Nason is a “talented” administrator who will no doubt take the club to the “next level”.

“The success of the Darwin Salties in our first two years has been amazing, but we want to get even better and employing a full-time GM like Matt will help us do that,” he said.

“Matt has grown up around basketball and is the former president of the RIP City NBL1 club in Queensland.

“He has extensive private sector experience and is a former Darwin boy who is excited to be back in the Territory.”

Rowston also acknowledged the work of the club’s earlier GMs, DBA general manager Kerri Savidge and BNT chief executive John Mitchell, for their efforts while simultaneously running their own organisations.

Having already found success with the men’s and women’s teams after they played in this year’s finals, as well as wheelchair team being crowned 2023’s National Champions, Nason’s appointment is indicative of the club’s strategic planning as they continue to pursue full-time professional NBL and WNBL licences.

“The Salties are preparing for the possibility of the Territory winning an NBL and WNBL license in the future and employing a full-time GM is a strategic part of that,” Rowston said.

“We want our NBL1 club to eventually grow into an NBL and WNBL club.

“We believe that having teams in full-time professional competitions would provide a huge boost for the Territory and the Salties want to help make it happen.”
