Don't miss out on the headlines from Local Sports Stars. Followed categories will be added to My News.
THE search is on for local sports stars destined to become Australia’s most skilled athletes.
The NT News has started its search for local sports stars across four categories: junior sports star, services to sport, team of excellence and the inspiration award.
BMX rider Leonardo Prandi, 9, is the latest junior sports star nominee.
“I love bikes and wanted to learn how to jump and do tricks,” he said.
Leonardo trains at least five times a week.
“I also do Crossfit sessions normally once a week but if I could I would be at the track every day,” he said.
With dreams to one day win an Olympic gold medal, the sky is the limit for young Leo who already has an impressive awards record.
He scored a place at the NT titles last October and placed 16th overall at the Victorian Track Attack series in January.
But ever the good sportsman, Leo stays humble.
“Riding against my friends is tough as I think we all deserve to win,” he said.
“I think all BMX riders should be nominated as it’s a great sport and everyone deserves to win.”
Editor Matt Williams encouraged people to get behind their local sport stars and nominate them.
“Sport is such a big part of life in the Territory and there are many unsung heroes,” he said. “These awards recognise the importance we place on those who make a difference in the sporting community.
“We want to celebrate the people who do so much in this space to make sport what it is in the NT.”
Nominations close August 31, with winners announced at a presentation in October. To nominate or for more information, visit localsportsstars.com.au/ntnews
