The hugely popular McArthur River Mining Darwin Ocean Swim is back this weekend for its 19th edition.
More than 200 swimmers, 50 water safety crew, volunteers, organisers and hundreds of supporters will head to Casuarina Beach on Sunday morning for the iconic event.
Darwin Surf Lifesaving Club will host the big swim meet with swimmers able to choose from a 1.2km or 2.1km course.
The swim starts on the Casuarina side of the beach near the Rapid Creek footbridge and tracks along the Dripstone cliffs as the sun rises.
Darwin Surf Life Saving Club President Michelle Taylor said the unique event was made possible with the help of their passionate volunteers.
“This is a unique event, while most of the nation is shivering through winter competitors can take the plunge and swim in the warm tropical waters of the Top End,” she said.
“We are proud to again be hosting this event, which would not happen without our wonderful, passionate volunteer lifesavers who want to share the NT and surf lifesaving lifestyle and make it safe for the swimmers to enjoy.
“The club is extremely grateful for the support given by Surf Life Saving NT (SLSNT) and our sponsors.”
The swim includes the option of a ‘fun’ category where entrants can use fins, snorkels, wetsuits, and colourful swimwear.
The event was created in 2004 by veteran Surf Lifesaving members including Helen Gould, Brian Gallagher and Moira Wigley who have competed in the swim every year.
It is the Darwin Surf Life Saving Club’s largest fundraising event of the year.
The club promotes being safe in the water, with volunteer surf life savers patrolling Nightcliff, Casuarina and Mindil beaches on Sunday mornings and afternoons in the Dry Season.
