The NT is sending one of its largest ever athletics squads interstate to compete in a national school-aged championship.
There will be 23 athletes from across the NT competing in track and field events at the Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Championships in Brisbane.
The NT squad is made up of 13-17 year old able and para-athletes, with three from East Arnhem Land, two from Katherine and six from Central Australia.
Athletes qualified for the squad off the back of their performances at the NT Athletics Championships in September.
A good showing Brisbane could lead to qualification for the Australian National Championships to be held in Perth next April.
Athletics NT executive officer Leanne Chin said it was exciting to see so many athletes getting their chance to represent the Territory.
“The number of young athletes who have qualified to attend represents the calibre of young athletes coming through the ranks,” she said.
“All of the squad is aiming to beat their PBs and they know a spot at Australian Champs could be the prize.”
The team managers include local athletics coach Roger Chin and former Olympians Justin Anlezark and Suzanne Grayson.
Anlezark competed in the shot put at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics and will be the team’s Throws Coach, while Grayson competed in the marathon at the 1996 Olympics.
“We are extremely proud to have Justin, who lives in Katherine, and Suzanne who is based in East Arnhem Land, coaching and mentoring our young athletes,” Ms Chin said.
“Their involvement is invaluable.”
The Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Championships are being held at the Queensland Sports & Athletics Centre in Brisbane from December 6-8.
