Mindil FC premier league women take out FNT treble

It was a season for the ages for the black and yellow Mindil Aces as they finished season 2024 with five of a possible six trophies.

Mindil Aces FC premier league men celebrate their 1-0 grand final victory over Hellenic AC.

Mindil Aces FC finally conquered their demons and claimed glory on the biggest stage.

Against fierce rivals and reigning dual champions Hellenic AC, Mindil’s premier men’s and women’s teams finally redeemed themselves after last year’s double defeat.

Up first were the women who capped off their stellar 2024 season in style with a statement 4-1 win – the same scoreline as their semi final clash – claiming the FNT treble in the process.

Zoe Courtney got Mindil on the scoresheet first, connecting with a cross on the top of the box.

Sarah Stenhouse doubled the minor premiers league shortly after, catching out Hellenic’s keeper with a header.

Golden boot winner and constant scoring threat Sophia Makrylos found the back of the net for Hellenic’s lone goal of the match, launching a free kick from 30m to put the score at 2-1.

A soggy pitch caused issues for Hellenic in the second half, a Clare Davey shot dribbled its way across the line after a keeper error.

Dual code star Cassie McWilliams then landed the final blow of the night scoring the fourth goal for Mindil, putting the game out of Hellenic’s reach.

It was a much closer affair in the men’s final in what was a physical and passionate clash.

Mindil’s goal and the lone goal of the night came courtesy of Sam Burgess who found himself in the six yard box with enough time to launch the ball into the roof of the net.

Both outfits pushed the point hard for the entirety of the game, but some standout defensive work from Hellenic’s back line and excellent saves from Kane McAdam saw the score remain a 1-0 game.

Ace’s captain Matt Wallace put together a man of the match performance after moving from the midfield to centre back after his starting centre went down early to an injury.

Elsewhere, Mindil’s men’s and women’s reserve’s weren’t able to complete the four-peat with the men losing 1-0 to Palmerston and the women also losing 1-0 to Hellenic.

Very proud of his club’s efforts, Mindil president Cliff Mania said it was a finish to the season the premier players deserved.

“It’s brilliant to finish the season on a high and it’s no less than the players deserve,” he said.

“It’s a testament to the effort, heart and culture of the club to have 4 senior teams into their grand finals including our two reserve grade teams, and to take out both the premiership and championship in the top division is something all our players and coaches should be so proud of.”
