Matt Hammond and Jacob Dickman among players to get bans in Darwin Cricket

Dissent, offensive language and abuse were some of the reasons Darwin cricketers faced the tribunal over the past two weeks.

Root takes the mickey with TWO reverse scoops

Three Darwin cricketers have received formal cautions and suspended bans for either dissent or using abusive language following another heated round of local cricket.

And premiership captain Matthew Hammond was banned for two playing days for dissent after an appeal for a wicket was turned down.

Hammond was bowling at Kahlin Oval against Waratah on June 3 when his appeal for a caught behind dismissal was rejected, a Darwin & Districts Cricket Competition tribunal report reveals.

However, Hammond showed dissent by turning back, facing the bowler’s end umpire and loudly exclaimed: “How is that not out?”

He then “aggressively intimated” to kick the ground “with force”, the report revealed.

When drinks were called after the over, Hammond reportedly walked to the boundary and continued to show dissent about the decision while making an “audible obscenity” by yelling “F*ck this” or words to that effect.

It was heard by match officials and spectators.

Hammond received a ban of two playing days and a further two more playing days suspended for 12 months.

It follows seven cricketers getting suspended over two consecutive rounds in May.

Meanwhile, a week later in the same game, Darwin opener Jacob Dickman yelled “f*ck” after being out stumped in the 72nd over, which was heard by officials and spectators.

Dickman, who had made a memorable 109 until that point, was given a formal caution and a suspended for one playing day.

On the same day at Cazalys Oval during the 52nd over, Southern Districts player Corey Kelly hit a boundary.

Southern Districts had already surpassed Palmerston’s first innings score and captain Tim Garner had opted to bat on.

However, while attempting to field the ball, Palmerston player Andrew Somerville was injured.

While he was receiving medical attention, Palmerston teammate Jack Freeman yelled out to Garner from point with words to the effect of: “Look what you’ve done you c**t”.

The following exchange then reportedly occurred:

Garner: “What did you say?”

Freeman: “Look what you’ve done.”

Garner: “And then what.”

Freeman: “You c**t.”

Garner: “Keep your mouth shut.”

The language was deemed “obscene, offensive or insulting” and Freeman received a day’s ban suspended for 12 months.

Meanwhile, on June 11 at Kahlin Oval in a Sunday division 1 match, Waratah’s Thuduwage don Thiwanka Perera was dismissed caught behind for one run in the opening over against Darwin.

However, instead of leaving the field, Perera turned and faced the standing umpire and stated: “It hit my pad, it didn’t hit the bat”, or words to that effect.

Perera lingered on the ground until he was told to leave the field.

He received a formal caution and a suspended one playing day ban for dissent.
