The Territory Stingers have named their full roster to represent the NT in their inaugural season playing in the prestigious Malaysian Hockey League.
The squad combines a mix of young and experienced talent ready to showcase the hockey playing depth of the NT.
The Stingers’ squad highlights the strength of Northern Territory talent, featuring local athletes who have represented the Territory at national and international levels.
Among the standout players returning to the squad is home grown talent Leon Hayward, a 49 time capped New Zealand National Black Stick, and capped Kookaburra goalkeeper.
Hayward making his Stingers return showcases the Territory’s ability to nurture world class talent and the significant meaning of wearing the Territory Stingers uniform.
He said it would be a special to be able to give back to hockey in the Northern Territory and help the younger players starting their journey.
“It will be quite an emotional experience to be a part of helping the next generation of players coming from where I’m from and starting their Stingers journey,” he said.
“Hockey in the Territory has had a bit of rough patch but there are so many exciting things in motion to give the next generation the opportunities that I had to make it at a higher level.”
The team will also benefit from the leadership and experience of former Australian Kookaburra Joel Carroll who has both an Olympic bronze and Commonwealth gold to his name.
Carroll is a legend of the Territory Stingers and brings with him the prestige of double Champions Trophy gold medals and a wealth of experience.
Hockey NT technical director Michelle Caden said the list showcased the talent the Territory had to offer.
“From our youngest debutants, Tobias Jenner and Joe Lauritsen, at just 17, to the experienced core of 21–28 year olds, and our seasoned senior generals,” she said.
“For our next generation to share the field and watch close up legends like Leon Hayward, Adrian Lockley, Joel Carroll, Tarrant Haami-Jones, and Adam Luck go to battle will provide a powerful learning opportunity and experience.”
Stingers legend David Skippings will coach the squad and continues his role after guiding the team through a successful Festival of Hockey campaign in September.
