Judo star Alannah Joyce’s incredible results and commitment to her sport have been recognised after she was named the NT Sportsperson of the Year.
Joyce’s drive for success across the past couple of years catapulted her to the number one rank in the Northern Territory and Australia.
And in front of more than 200 members of the Territory sporting community and against a strong field of finalists she was named the Sportsperson of the Year.
Macey Sheridan was awarded the Junior Sportsperson of the Year for her amazing swimming skills, winning six golds at the 2023 Australian Age Swimming Championships at just 13 years old.
Her medal haul was the best ever by a Northern Territory age swimmer, and she continues to find success against the best in the country.
Athletics star John Bermingham took home the Masters Sportsperson of the Year accolade for the second consecutive year.
Bermingham was also awarded Centralian Senior Citizen of the Year in 2023 for his contributions to athletics in Central Australia.
The Ropearoos skipping team Sammy George and Abbey George took home the NT Team of the Year award after their exceptional skills led them to the gold in the World Jump Rope Championships.
Caleb Nicol, an up-and-coming BMX bike rider, was awarded the NT Local Performance of the Year after setting new record and placing second in the NT BMX State Series Championships as the youngest rider in his category.
The career of four-time AFL Premiership winner Cyril Rioli was also recognised, as the Hawthorn legend received the Steve Abala Role Model award.
The award is presented to ‘a superb athlete in any sporting field whose sporting career has been strongly connected to the NT and who is considered an ideal role model for our Territory youngsters to aspire to emulate’.
Sport Minister Kate Worden said the awards were a great occasion to bring the community together and celebrate the contributions and successes of those involved.
“Sport plays an important role in bringing our community together, from the volunteers and administrators who coordinate and run our clubs, to the participants who strive for excellence,” she said.
“The Sports Awards are a great occasion to bring our sporting community together to celebrate contributions and successes that make being part of a community sporting club so good.
“It’s important to recognise the countless hours of training, volunteering, and support from all those nominated and awarded, backed with the support of their families, friends, and sporting organisations.”
