IN her first season as a forward, Ebony Miller has all but secured honours as the Women’s Premier League top goalscorer after kicking her second 10-goal haul in Southern Districts’ demolition of Tracy Village on the weekend.

The Crocodiles star has so far kicked 47 goals, second-placed Arthurina Moreen of Palmerston trailing with an impressive 30.

Miller, 36, who also kicked 10 goals against the Big River Hawks, has played the majority of her career behind the forwards but has fit right into the goalscoring mould this season.

“It was quite unexpected, I didn’t really know how many goals I had scored until after the game as I wasn’t keeping count,” Miller told the NT News after her big scoring haul against the Razorbacks.

“The girls knew I was sitting top for goalkicking but also that there was someone close behind so they worked to get the ball to me.

“I never would have thought I could have been in range for top spot but at this stage it’s looking like it’s almost locked in.”

The forward travels from Alice Springs each week with fellow Croc Samantha Hoogeveen-Hill to help push her side into finals contention.

Districts currently sit third on the WPL ladder and will need the boots of Miller and other forwards such as April Lewis to keep them in finals contention.

Coach Tarmon Elliott has been impressed with Miller’s performances throughout the season, citing her as one of the more inspirational players in the team.

“She’s been pretty dominant up forward which is better as she’s more used to playing in the midfield or down back,” Elliott said.

“Most impressive is her willingness to make contests and win at all costs no matter the player.

“She leads by example, everyone looks up to her, when she does something well others try to do similar. A player like her will be crucial for our finals chances, she’s worth her weight in gold.”
