AFTER a massive year of Women’s Premier League footy we take a look at the players in the running for the coveted women’s Rising Star award.

The Rising Star acknowledges the best and brightest up and comers of the year and in the women’s competition there has been plenty of great talent to choose from.

Ciaralii Parnell

Club: St Marys

2021-22 WPL Games: 10

Turning 18 this year. Made her premier league debut in Round 1 for St Marys. A regular contributor and a player that is willing to help out. A player who can step up into ruck and not afraid to take on her opponent.

Club: Palmerston

2021-22 WPL Games: 6

At 17 years of age T’Sharni is captain of the Palmerston Magpies under 18’s side, playing 14 games this season at 18’s level and debuting in Round 5 for Women’s Premier League T’Sharni has gone onto play 6 WPL games in the 21/22 season and another member of the Cazalys NT Thunder under 18’s program for 2022.

Grace Whittaker

Club: Southern Districts

2021-22 WPL Games: 2

Only 16 years of age, has really taken her footy to the next level, playing at Under 18 level and then debuting in WPL, has since relocated to Adelaide to play for Norwood in the Development squad there and will be a key to Cazalys NT Thunder Academy in 2022.

Erini Gikas

Club: St Marys

2021-22 WPL Games: 8

18 this year, Erini enters her draft year. An exciting hard at the ball player. Won the NAB AFLW Best on field award for the two game series in 2021 for Cazalys NT Thunder Academy. Has had a knee injury and been unable to play since round 10 just prior to Christmas, but working towards being fit and ready for the NAB League game at the end of March.

Annabel Kievit

Club: Waratah

2021-22 WPL Games: 10

Had an injury interrupted 2021 year in the Cazalys NT Thunder program, however has bounced back strongly. Managed to play for Gold Coast in the Under 17 NAB AFLW Championships and also came back to wind up the NAB AFLW Championships with a strong showing for Cazalys NT Thunder Academy. 11 games this year with all bar 1 being in WPL and a consistent performer.

Rhania Hewitt

Club: Southern Districts

2021-22 WPL Games: 4

Rhania 18 in December a key player for Southern Districts, Rhania has played 8 games in Under 18’s and a further 4 in WPL. Averaging nearly a goal a game in 18’s she is a key contributor and team player across the ground. A player to watch in finals and across NAB League and our Winter series.

Emma Stark

Club: St Marys

2021-22 WPL Games: 3

16 year old. A player who has a natural talent for football whether it be playing or umpiring. Can play in the middle, however very dangerous in front of goal. Kicked three goals on her debut against Waratah.

Sophie Berry

Club: Southern Districts

2021-22 WPL Games: 10

Only 16 years of age. Started the 21/22 TIO NTFL season in Under 16’s prior to 17 and has since played 5 games in 18’s and continued her rise through to WPL going on to play 10 games. A part of the Cazalys NT Thunder under 19’s squad in 2021 managed 1 game in the NAB AFLW Championships and a player to watch in the Cazalys NT Thunder Academy under 18’s program this year and still remaining eligible as an overage player also in the 16’s NAB AFLW Championships this year.

Cassie McWilliam

Club: Nightcliff

2021-22 WPL Games: 14

Turning 19 in late Feb, has been consistent in WPL for Nightcliff playing 14 games for the season and has been signed to Williamstown in the VFLW for season 2022. Has the ability to come into Cazalys NT Thunder program as an overage for the upcoming NAB League game.

Freda Wosomo

Club: Darwin

2021-22 WPL Games: 15

Freda entered the 2021 / 22 TIO NTFL season coming off the back of winning the Best and Fairest award in the Big Rivers competition (BRFL) Freda is a live wire and has a natural talent with ball in hand, invited to the Cazalys NT Thunder academy again for 2022. Kicking 9 goals across the season. One to watch closely.
