THE Queenants cemented themselves in NTFL history as they won their first ever Women’s Premier League grand final with a 7.4 (46) to 5.5 (35) victory over Darwin Buffettes.
There had been less than 10 points between the two sides on their three meetings through the 2020-21 season, but it was the double-blues with the most recent victory.
And it was the Buffettes who set down the early marker in the grand final with proven goal scorer Ashanti Bush taking a grab and firing through the posts.
PINT struck soon after with Casey Morris and suddenly another close affair between the two outfits looked on the agenda.
Dom Carbone and Molly Althouse looked dominant across the midfield early in the game and their efforts were rewarded with a goal
But just as it looked like the Buffettes were in control, the Queenants got on the roll with Colleen Gwynne Medal winner Jasmyn Hewett and hard-running Claudia Fabris scoring consecutive goals.
PINT further cemented their lead in the following periods due to the work of Hewett and co-captains Katie Streader and Cassie Henderson.
A strong offensive tackle from Jessie Baumer led to a defensive error from Bianca Stokes and soon after the Queenants capitalised through another Hewett score.
And it was that defence across the field that paid dividends for PINT as they shut down any of the running chances that the Buffettes found themselves with.
But they weren’t without blows of their own with talisman Katie Streader carried off midway through the third quarter with an injury that saw her out for the rest of the game.
“I can’t put it into words. We’ve worked so hard and we’ve done for us but also for the girls that have previously pulled on the Greenants jumper,” Streader told the Sunday Territorian.
“This win came from heart. Heart, intensity, work rate and just working for each other and doing it for each other.
“I love this team, I can’t put that into words. Everyone dug so deep and this means so much for us and the club. It was hard work watching from the side at the end but I’m so proud of them.”
