Replay: NTFL - Round 14 – Southern Districts v Darwin Buffaloes

There are ball magnets and then there are meat magnets, like NTFL leader Brodie Carroll.

The Waratah co-skipper has won the individual tackle count in three games – including a season-high of eight in rounds one and 12 – to top the table with 58, despite missing two games after the Christmas break.

Carroll is closely followed by Palmerston’s Eric Guthrie (55) and Nick Yarran (50) of St Mary’s.

At a club level, apart from a quiet display against Wanderers in round 15 where he recorded a solitary tackle, only Jayden Magro (thrice), James Munro, Tom Cree, Dylan Collis, Will Collis, Robbie Turnbull, Josh Le Grice and Adam Gulden have managed to pick up more tackles than Carroll in games this season.

In fact, only 22 opposition players have collected more tackles in the 12 games Carroll has played — apart from that Wanderers match.

Meanwhile, two bottom teams failed to take advantage of centre square dominance from their big men in round 17.

Buffaloes beast Ben Archard continued his strong form with 43 hit-outs against Carroll’s Waratah on Saturday, albeit in a losing cause by 18 points.

It was a similar story at Cazalys Arena where star Palmerston ruckman Matt Dennis had 24, yet his team went down by 48 points.

A big reason was 61 touches and three goals between the Eagles’ two most damaging Motlops, Thomas and Marlon, backing up a total of 41 touches and five goals the previous week, in a one-point thriller over Buffaloes.

Buffs ruck Archard unrivalled as NTFL hit out king

IT may not have been quite the NTFL season the Darwin Buffaloes had been hoping for, but there’s no denying one of their own has risen higher than anyone else in a certain stat.

Buffs’ own Ben Archard has been the unquestionable ruck king in season 2021-22, racking up the hit outs each and every week, fending off all comers.

In round 16, it was his work in the ruck which kept the Double Blues leading the contest for so long with 42 – you read that right – 42 hit outs against Wanderers.

The most registered by any Muk Muks players was three.

But that huge total isn’t even his highest of the season, with Archard managing 50 hit outs against the Tiwi Bombers.

From the 13 games he has played Archard has racked up 463 hit outs, with the next most being Pat Gallow of Southern Districts with 272, who has also played the same number of games.

Over the course of 16 rounds only five players have exceeded the triple digit mark, including Jordan Wilkins of Waratah (240 from 14 games), Ryan Smith of St Mary’s (210 from 11 games) and Will Rowbottom of Palmerston (184 from 11 games).

His stat mastery didn’t end there in round 16 as he topped his side’s disposal count with 20 (including 16 kicks and four handballs), made five clearances and three tackles.

Other big performances at the weekend came from Nightcliff defender Daniel Bowles who managed 29 disposals (24 kicks and five handballs) keeping the Palmerston forwards well restrained.

St Mary’s skipper Nate Paredes produced another best on ground performance against Waratah in his side’s big win.

Paredes had 26 disposals (20 kicks and six handballs) and also contributed 11 clearances and seven tackles.

The NTFL’s intercept mark king can’t be caught

WANDERERS’ top three aspirations have taken a hit with the competition’s intercept king ruled out for a week.

According to the latest NTFL statistics, the former Werribee and Calder Cannons defender has 36 intercept marks this season, easily leading the competition with Nightcliff’s Daniel Bowles’ 23 grabs the next best.

Newman took six intercept marks against Waratah on Australia Day, including several in an important third term where Wanderers threatened to take the game away.

He also had a match-high four in his previous game, a 44-point loss in round 12 against Waratah.

And his highest number for the season is nine against Tiwi Bombers in round 11.

However, Newman picked up a rough conduct charge following the Foundation Cup match against Waratah.

The cited incident involved rough conduct against Waratah’s Corey Rich during the third quarter of the game, with Newman deciding to contest the case in front of the tribunal.

The NTFL’s independent tribunal heard the matter last night, after the match review panel initially classified Newman’s act as intentional, medium impact and high contact, resulting in a three-match penalty.

Newman was offered a two-match penalty with an early guilty plea but opted to have the charge heard instead.

However, on Wednesday night, after reviewing footage and evidence, the tribunal amended the charge to intentional conduct, medium impact and body contact.

Newman pleaded guilty and received a one-match penalty.

Meanwhile, other big stats performers in a waterlogged round 15 were the ever-present stat toppers Michael Bowden from Southern Districts and St Mary’s skipper Nate Paredes.

Bowden strengthened his spot atop the disposals tally with another strong contribution of 31 touches in a losing effort against the Saints.

Saints skipper Paredes also had a big day out on his 100th game for the side bringing up 30 disposals, including 17 kicks and 13 handballs while also picking up a game-high eight clearances.

In the battle of the big men, it was once again Darwin Buffaloes’ Ben Archard who topped the hit-outs, winning the ball 34 times.

OVERWHELMING STATS MAKING TIGERS KINGS OF THE NTFL

To be any chance of beating reigning premier Nightcliff, it appears you need to shutdown its blue chip midfield at the very least.

The Tigers, who are gunning for an NTFL four-peat this season, have only lost the total disposals count once this year way back in October — and only then by just three possessions.

That was round one in a two-goal loss to St Mary’s where the touches tally difference was marginal (276-273).

Despite a loss to Southern Districts in round nine by 14 points, Nightcliff still managed to win the disposal count (277-205).

The biggest differentials were against cellar dweller Tiwi Bombers (351-220) in round 12, and a round three clash versus Wanderers (358-211).

It shouldn’t surprise then that the Tigers have four of the league’s best disposal getters in second-placed dual Nichols medal winner Brodie Filo (294 at 24.5 per game), third Shaun Wilson (261 at 20), fourth Daniel Bowles (260 at 23.6) and seventh Sam Harper (252 at 19.3).

Tigers coach Chris Baksh said he wasn’t surprised his team was tracking so well with that particular benchmark.

“It’s a good stat as a coach as it shows we don’t have just one dominant player,” Baksh said.

“And they use the ball well also.”

However, he said the club had to improve its goalkicking.

“We feel that when games have been close we’ve had more control of the ball but we’re not converting to goals,” he said.

“We need to improve and we know that as a club, it’ll be something to work on over the next four rounds.”
