Nightcliff Tigers forward and 2019-20 Chaney Medal winner Trent Melville to be a threat against St Mary’s in 2020-21 Grand Final

IT’S been a different Trent Melville this season, but one thing is still abundantly clear – the star Tigers forward is a winner.

IT’S been a different Trent Melville this season, but one thing is still abundantly clear – the star Tigers forward is a winner.

The 2019-20 Chaney Medal winner has 30 goals to his name this campaign, down on the 51 majors he kicked last season.

But that doesn’t mean he has not been a threat up front.

The big 29-year-old also loves a big occasion, and Saints will be wary of the attacking threat he poses in tonight’s grand final at TIO Stadium, after he kicked five against them in last year’s competition decider.

“It’s been a good season. I’ve played a different role with Kyle Emery and John Butcher up front this season, but I’ve really enjoyed it,” Melville – who also toasted an Adelaide Football League Division 2 title with Tea Tree Gully last year – told the NT News.

Emery has had a brilliant season in his return to Tigerland following two years with Palmerston, kicking 58 goals.

“Kyle’s fitted back in perfectly after a couple of years away, and it’s credit to him,” Melville said.

“I try to pass on my knowledge whenever I can, but he’s just done his thing and played very well.”

The Green Machine got within nine points when both teams last met in Round 14, and Melville’s five majors got his team over the line in last year’s competition decider, the yellow-and-blacks winning a tense affair by 13 points.

“Both teams always seem to match up well. We’ve both got great players across the park,” Melville said.

“They’ve got one of the best back lines in the comp, so it’s pretty exciting and the boys are looking forward to this one.”

Melville said former Dockers star and teammate Ryan Nyhuis could be one of the contenders for the 2020-21 Chaney Medal.

“We’ve all walked a bit taller since he came back for us (his first game this season was the Tigers’ win over Saints in Round 14),” Melville said.

Melville earlier this week revealed to the NT News he will stay in Darwin during the dry season and play for Katherine in the Big Rivers League
