INVESTIGATIONS into “behavioural issues” from regional AFL players participating in a Darwin-based competition are under way, following last week’s Quitline Regional Challenge.
AFLNT played down reports of drunken behaviour and damage to property understood to have occurred at Darwin’s Club Tropical Resort and Lee Point Caravan Park where players stayed during last weekend’s indigenous carnival in Darwin.
AFLNT chief executive Stuart Totham told the NT News no AFLNT staff were implicated by the incident.

“AFL Northern Territory is aware of some behavioural issues that are alleged to have taken place around last weekend’s Quitline Regional Challenge,” an AFLNT spokesman said.
“As such, AFLNT has been actively working with stakeholders involved and has appointed an independent investigator to examine exactly what occurred.”
The spokesman said the incident wouldn’t affect future opportunities to engage with regional communities and providing them with access to these competitions.
“The investigator will also help identify opportunities that AFLNT can use to improve the running of such events in the future,” he said.
“AFLNT remains committed to fostering and providing opportunities for remote players.” The spokesman said AFLNT was not in a position to make further comment until the investigations were complete. Club Tropical was not able to comment.

The regional challenge saw nine teams travel from Bathurst Island, East Arnhem, Katherine, Kalkarindji, Lajamanu, Maningrida, Gove, Ngukurr and the West Daly region over the weekend to compete in the competition, providing them an opportunity to play competitive footy against teams across the Territory.
The winning team, the Ngukurr Bulldogs, received $1000 in prizemoney and will be awarded free team registration into the next Regional Challenge.
