Brenton Toy wants his coaching contract extended with Waratahs

BRENTON Toy wants to coach Waratahs for a third season.

The former Tiwi Bombers and St Marys coach has signalled his intention to continue in the top job as he prepares the Warriors for a second consecutive elimination final.

"I'm keen to go again, but of course they have to appoint me again," he said.

"And I'm saying that now, but in three weeks time I'll sit down with the missus and see exactly where I'm at.

"That's what I intend to do, get through to the end of the season and focus on that before making a final decision.

"It's also when I'll sit down with (president) Leigh (Jennings) and see what direction he wants to take."

Toy has placed a big emphasis on youth in his two seasons in charge at Gardens Oval, a move that has brought criticism from some circles.

But, for Toy, the progress made by youngsters Sam Godden, Toby Hunkin, Will Hetherington and Tiwi speedster Harley Puruntatameri justifies the means.

"Sam hasn't played a lot this season, but certainly in my first year he came on in a big way," he said.

"It's the same with William Hetherington, who has got under the radar in a lot of games this season.

"He has played through half back most of the season and probably been one of our more consistent performers.

"Toby Hunkin has shown he's suited to league football and 16-year-old Harley Puruntatameri booted six goals in a classy performance."

"But it's been in bits and pieces. Some of them have made significant progress where in other cases they've let themselves down or moved on in other areas.

"So, in general, the progress we've made has been pretty good, and that's something we can work on."

Toy raised a rare smile when asked if Tahs would be doing more than making up the numbers when the finals kick off next week.

"We've beaten Districts this year, lost to Nightcliff by 10 points and almost beaten Wanderers twice," he said. "The only team we haven't come close to is St Marys, so we give ourselves every chance this week.

"That's fine if they say we're there to make up the five teams in the finals.

"We're in fifth spot and if you look at it on face value then that is where we probably deserve to finish."
