The first week of Tasmanian Netball League finals produced plenty of highlights, with one clash set to be remembered as an all-time classic. Watch all four REPLAYS here.

The Cavaliers are one step closer to completing the perfect season of redemption after accounting for their nearest rivals Kingston in Saturday’s Opens qualifying final.

In one of four blockbuster week 1 Tasmanian Netball League finals, it was the first-place Cavs that took advantage of home court with a 62-49 win to punch their ticket to the 2025 grand final.

After going down to the Hawks in last year’s decider, it will be a shot at redemption when they face either the Blues or the Hawks in two weeks’ time.

While disappointed with the loss, Kingston do get the chance to rectify Saturday’s result if they can knock off the Hawks in next week’s preliminary final.

The Hawks defeated Cripps 50-35 in Saturday’s elimination final to keep their season alive and send Cripps packing.

While both Opens finals were full of highlights, it was the U19 elimination final between Cripps and Kingston that will be remembered as an all-time classic.

The 41-40 result went in favour of Cripps, who produced a comeback for the ages in the dying minutes of the contest.

Down by two with three minutes to go, Cripps somehow regained momentum through back-to-back goals from shooter Ruby Clark.

They tied the game with two minutes remaining before Kingston jumped ahead by one ahead of a frantic final minute.

Some terrific defence allowed Clark to once again tie the ball game, before her partner in the circle Alice Bowering became the hero with a successful shot with nine seconds on the clock giving Cripps the lead.

Kingston managed to transfer the ball into their circle from the centre pass but a missed shot from Daisy Bennett on the buzzer ensured Cripps’ season remained alive.

In the U19 qualifying final, it was the Hawks that won 53-38.

Cripps have one of the toughest tasks of the Tasmania Netball League finals, trying to win the premiership from fourth, but centre Matilda Kaye believes coming in as the underdogs suits her team.

In the first week of finals, Cripps will take on the Northern Hawks in a do-or-die elimination final, with the winner set to face the loser of the Cavaliers v Kingston qualifying final.

Both the Opens match-ups will form half of KommunityTV’s massive Saturday of TNL action at the Silverdome, with the U19s and Opens finals streamed live and exclusive.

The Hawks and Cripps kick off the action from 12pm, with the U19 elimination final between Cripps and Kingston to follow at 2pm.

The qualifying finals will then be the focus, with the U19 battle between the Hawks and Devon at 4pm and the Cavs and Kingston from 6pm.

Kaye said there was a sense of nerves heading into the weekend.

“For us it is more about application than capability, we are more than capable of winning each and every game, but it’s more just putting on the court what we are doing at training,” Kaye said.

“We’ve got good depth in the club. We’ve been able to use our premier league players to help us in defence and we have also used some of our wing defence players and moved them into the circle.

“Every game we have played against the Hawks have been quite good games, our last game was a draw and that just shows you how closely we match up with them.

“For us, it will just be about putting out a 60 minute game and not falling short at the end of each quarter.”

For Kingston, they will take on the toughest of tasks in the Opens competition, taking on the undefeated Cavs in the qualifying final.

Kingston’s goal attack Lucy Street said nothing will change heading into this weekend.

“I think it is the same game plan as always, get out there, hit it strong and hopefully everything else takes it for itself,” Street said.

“There is always fine tuning to do but we have our style of play and we are running with it and it has worked for us so far, hopefully we just do the same thing as we have done all season and hopefully it continues.

“We have a few older girls this year so it has been good having that experience and I think our connection as well, we have all played together for such a long time and that really shows on court.”

The U19s elimination final between Cripps and Kingston shapes as a thriller with one win apiece and a draw between the two sides this season.

Kingston co-captain Mackenzie Graves said confidence is high among the group.

“We are really comfortable going in, we have had a couple of injuries leading towards the finals but if we play a full four quarter effort, we will be able to get it done,” Graves said.

“We drew against Cripps last time and it showed a lot because we were down by 10 and were able to pull it back.

“It is a lot different (elimination final preparation) especially with a younger team, there will be nerves, it is all or nothing so we just have to go in and leave everything on the court.”

While Cripps captain Ruby Kaye said there is a feeling among her team to not let a good season end early.

“Definitely ready to put in a full effort, it could be our last game so we will put everything on the court and not leave anything in the tank,” Kaye said.

“They are a strong side, they are quick, so we know what we need to do to stop their run and carry.

“If we can do that and pay attention to our style of game play, we should walk away winners on Saturday.”
