NSW CHS got their first win of the tournament, beating ACT, on another quality day of action at the ASSRL nationals. Check every REPLAY from Day 3 here.

Replay: NSWCHS v ACT (U18 boys) - ASSRL National Championships Day 3

The impressive ACT schoolboys can no longer challenge for the ASSRL championship title this year after falling 26-10 at the hands of the NSW CHS schoolboys.

In Pool B, NSW CIS, NSW CHS and the ACT each captured one win in the pool stages, but points differential will see NSW CHS and NSW CIS advance and contest Thursday’s semi-finals.

NSW CHS lost by 10 (to NSWCIS), NSW CIS lost by 12 (to ACT) and on Tuesday, NSW CHS ran in 16 unanswered points in the second half to come away 26-10 winners over the ACT and secure their spot in the finals.

Lincoln Fletcher, Darcy Smith and Zailen Campbell-Cook all crossed in the side’s inspired second half ambush which turned a 10-all halftime deadlock into a crucial win.

DAMN DARMODY

ACT fullback Braydan Darmody continued to impress in another strong showing by his side.

Darmody was his usual busy self, returning the ball with vigour and playmaking on the left edge alongside Jonah Anderson to put winger Patrick Dawson in for an early try.

Darmody was influential all game and on the stroke of halftime put Dawson in however the play was called back.

It was a big moment in the context of the game and NSW CHS, with Phoenix Godinet and Campbell-King key players, ensured that was the last time they weren’t on the front foot.

IN YOU GO

It said everything about how badly NSW CHS fullback Michael Nassar wanted to play a part in his team’s second half effort when the Hills Sports High School senior dislocated his thumb on the upright attempting to catch the kick restart and immediately popped it back in.

The fleet footed fullback let out a roar as his finger clipped the upright before looking down and quickly assessing the situation and popping it back into place, like an absolute champion.

Nassar was eventually taken off the field, but that was after he quickly rushed back into the defensive line ready and willing to get involved.

In other games, two tries each to Jope Rauqe and Cody Hopwood helped NSW CCC defeated Combined Affil. States 38-0 in the other under-18 boys contest.

In the girls, the QRSS girls under-18 team defeated Victoria 28-0 with Mercedez Taulelei-Siala scoring twice.

Other results saw NSW CHS beat NSW CCC 12-4 with ACT getting on top of NT 18-0.

FULLBACK STARS IN NSWCIS ROUT

Busy NSW CIS fullback Ella Knowles had the midas touch in her team’s 42-0 shutout win over WA on day three, nabbing five try assists in a classy performance.

Everything Knowles touched turned to gold and the brave WA girls couldn’t find an answer for her silky playmaking on the left edge.

Indeed the Central Coast Roosters Lisa Fiaola Cup fullback and New South Wales country Under-17s selection sprinkled magic dust wherever she went on the hallowed Coffs International Stadium turf.

Knowles, a Central Coast Sports College athlete, put in Ava Lavender, Ellie Brander, Regan Simpson and Olivia Saley for tries, with Saley snaring a double in a dazzling nine try blitz by the NSW CIS schoolgirls.

Two best buds, both in the Canberra Raiders system and both extremely talented, will be out to giant-kill another foe at the third day of the ASSRL National Championships kicking off Tuesday at Coffs Harbour.

Powerful ACT prop Jacob Ma’u-Pohiva and his halfback Jonah Anderson, both Erindale College boys, were at the centre of their team’s stunning 20-8 defeat of NSWCIS on Monday and will back up today against NSW CHS, who have to win to keep their title hopes alive.

Ma’u-Pohiva and Anderson are best mates, Year 12 boys who each played a huge role in winning their first outing of the championships.

“He is the captain for Erindale,” Ma’u-Pohiva said of Anderson.

“When I met Jonah I kind of stepped back, especially when I am on the bench, I just see the whole thing from a bird’s eye view, he plays a crucial role for us.

“They (halfbacks) are like the chess masters, they direct where we are going, I feel like it’s good because the whole team just backs his (Anderson’s) confidence.

“Once he says something everyone puts their trust in him, we know we are going to get into our set, complete it and we are going to defend and it is going to work out for us.”

Ma’u-Pohiva was a colossus in the middle third of the field, while Anderson’s deft grubber kicks put endless pressure on the NSWCIS defenders.

But that would come as no surprise to friends and family who have previously watched them excel.

The 17-year-old prop gave up Judo, where he was a very promising talent, to focus on rugby league while crafty halfback Anderson has performed impressively for the Raiders Harold Matthews side (2023) and SG Ball Cup side (2024) in the past.

New Zealand born Tongan terror Ma’u-Pohiva moved to Tuggeranong five years ago and growing up watched rugby league and rugby union.

“I have relatives that play in both rugby and rugby league so growing up it was always around me” he said.

Former Parramatta Eels prop Fuifui Moimoi, who he has adopted his braided hairstyle from, as well as All Blacks greats Jonah Lomu and Ardie Savea were players he grew up idolising and modelling his running game off.

“My goal is SG Ball and the Schoolboy Cup (Peter Mulholland Cup). Since this is my last year I want to make it a memorable one, go all the way with my school, just give back because they have helped me along the way,” he said.
