The younger brother of Queensland Origin sensation Selwyn Cobbo will get his own chance to shine on the national rugby league stage in Redcliffe this weekend.

Shamus Cobbo, who attends the same Murgon High School where his older brother became the first Indigenous school captain, will line up for the Indigenous Goannas at the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships.

The Goannas, which have played in the Under-15s at the tournament since 2019, brings together the best emerging Indigenous players from across the country to compete.

Every match of the premier schoolboys’ rugby league tournament will be exclusively live streamed by KommunityTV from July 2-8.

Cobbo will be one part of an exciting Goannas outfit that also includes four students from Tagai State College on Thursday Island.

ASSRL president Anthony Lanskey said the Goannas program, which has been overseen by Indigenous NRL legends Dean Widders and Timana Tahu, is a crucial piece of the championships philosophy of making the players “better people, not just better footballers”.

“It is fantastic because of not only the significance of first nations players to rugby league across its history but because it also gives the kids a chance (to play on a big stage) which they may not have had previously because of distance or opportunity,” Lanskey said.

“The first year Dean Widders was the coach of the team and he was phenomenal. He is overseeing the program again this year, along with Timana Tahu at the NRL. These guys come into camp to give the kids a wonderful experience.

“I think it is part of all our programs in terms of closing the gap. There is not an education system in our country that doesn’t have it at the forefront of what they do and the NRL is no different.

“The work they have done in the last few years in recognising the importance of that culture for our community, it fits hand-in-hand with what we want to achieve at the championships.”
