Central Coast Sports College is taking lessons from last year’s campaign as it looks to go one better in this year’s Schoolgirls Cup.
They were able to make the grand final against Hills Sports High, only to be shut-out 18-0.
They get their chance for redemption on Friday when they meet again for a spot in the decider, and coach Blake Austin hopes they’re peaking at the right time.
The NRL Schoolgirls Cup semi-final will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.
“We started pretty poorly in the first game, but we’ve improved as the campaign has gone on,” he said.
“There’s no perfect way to do it. I reminded the girls after we lost the first game. We coasted through last year and saved our worst for last.
“It doesn’t matter when that bad one comes. Hopefully it’s out of our system. We beat Hills in the early rounds last year.”
CCSC hasn’t played since their defeat of Illawarra SHS on 25 June, but they’ve had plenty of miles in the legs since then.
“The girls are exposed to a lot of external games like the ASSRL and a few have been in and out of the Harvey Norman (Women’s Premiership) system,” Austin said.
“Most teams are pretty even at this point. It will come down to the team that gets it right on the day. Hills are well coached under Patricia (Raikadroka).
“We’re excited. These are the games you want to be a part of. We’re at our best when we’re happy and chirpy, and we’ve been that of late.”
With a wealth of experience at the elite level to his name, Austin is well aware of the conditions that face his troops in Newcastle.
With wet conditions expected, he’s looking for his team to weather the Hills storm to hopefully lead them to victory.
“Dry weather suits us more than other teams. But we have a lot of skilful girls with big tickers and a lot of heart,” he said.
“In a dogfight, Makenna Hammond is someone that can make a real difference in the middle. She loves to get up under the ball. She can roll the sleeves up and have a good crack.
“We’ve also got Emilee-Rose Hall and Ellie Brander that can get a job done in the middle as well.
“Mia Vaotuua is capable of doing the tough stuff out of yardage but also the silky stuff in good ball.”
