A dominating second-half performance was enough for Cairns to secure another strong win over Southern Suburbs in FNQRL Round 13 action on Saturday.
Despite the return of gun five-eighth James Frazer for Suburbs, it wasn’t enough for the underdogs to notch up a major scalp over the three-time defending premiers.
They won the clash 30-12.

After both sides scored just one try each in the first-half, Cairns broke away in the second-half with Suburbs unable to halt their momentum.
In the earlier clashes, Cairns won the reserves clash 40-28 and 30-22 in the U19s.

The return of a Queensland Cup playmaker could not have come at a better time for Southern Suburbs.
With a meeting against three-time defending premiers Cairns Brothers this Saturday looming large, the surprise-packet Cockatoos will welcome gun five-eighth James Frazer back from Northern Pride duties.
The A-Grade, reserves and under-19 matches between the two clubs at Alley Park will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.
The Cockatoos have been far and away the biggest success story of the season, coming into the season without a win since 2022 and rattling off an eight game undefeated streak to start the season.
But they were brought back down to earth by the FNQRL titans in Brothers back in round 10, going down 40-12, before losing a nailbiter against Ivanhoes 26-24.
“The club is coming off some bad years, so obviously our depth and resilience is still tested week to week,” Suburbs coach Graham Clark said.
“We know Brothers are the standard, they’ve got the right blokes in the right places. There’s no use whining about it, we’ve just got to go out there and beat them.”
If there was ever an opportunity to right the ship it would be this week,
Suburbs will be boosted by the inclusion of superstar five-eighth Frazer with the Pride on a bye in the Queensland Cup.
“(James) has always had that ability, he’s just learned how to keep himself disciplined over the course of this season,” Clark said.
“He has really taken charge and steered the ship for us. It’s no secret that we missed him against Ivanhoes.
“It’s awesome that he’s getting his chance with the Pride, but when he’s back he’s super valuable to us.
“It’s not easy to replace an on-field general like that.”
Clark said the key to victory this week would be the side keeping their heads if the game is close in the final few minutes.
“No disrespect to Ivanhoes, they earned that win, but I think we gave that one a way with some poor errors in the last 10 minutes,” he said.
“It just came down to us trying to force the issue when we didn’t need to, or pushing when it wasn’t the right time.”
Fresh off a scintillating 42-6 win over the Knights, first-placed Brothers will be eager to send another message to the rest of the competition this weekend.
The live streamed action kicks off at 2pm with the under-19s clash, with the reserves on at 3.30 and lastly A-Grade at 5pm.
