Northern Territory will play an exciting brand of basketball when they head to Western Australia in early July for the U16 nationals.
And with a balanced team featuring a good mix of size and versatility, coach Fred Williams is heading into the nine-day tournament from July 1-9 with ‘high expectations’.
“This is the one age group where I think the NT does make a bit of noise, because we haven’t seen that big growth spurt yet,” he said.
“Between 16 and 18 you see that growth and when you have a large pool, as other states do, that’s where you start to see the gap.
“I do think this group will be able to go and compete, they’ve got the experience with some of the guys and can play some real high level basketball.”
Northern Territory begin their campaign on Saturday, July 2 on court 5 against ACT at 9am.

The tournament is to be held in Warwick and will have pool matches on the first five days before playing finals and classifications.
Play-offs and the grand final will be played on the final day of the event.
Williams said the team, which has ‘quite a few players from last year’, has a strong variety of personnel.
“It’s actually a very, very balanced group, which is something you don’t normally see with NT state teams,” he said.
“I do have a team which has a decent amount of size and versatility, so there will be a very fast-paced style, with my wings being the strong point.
“There’s a very standard structure of basketball across Australia right now, which is very high tempo with transition being the focus.
“You’ll see a lot of dribble, hand-off type of stuff and that’s about trying to get them in open space and being able to capitalise on opportunities when they come.”
Mitchell Hardy is expected to be a strong contributor, having dominated for Ellas Titans, while Romeo Link will be another to watch.
Aiden Anstess and Jayden Newell are also set to be huge inclusions in the team.
Williams said the national underage tournament gave the players a strong chance to showcase their skills and potentially go to the next level.
“For them, being up in the NT, they don’t get many opportunities to play in tournaments, so this gives them that experience and it puts them on the radar,” he said.
“If they are of that level and if they’re coachable, they can put that on display in front of the whole of Australia, so this is a huge, huge opportunity for them.”
