Victoria Metro 93 d NSW Metro 53

Victoria Metro remains the powerhouse of U16 boys basketball, smashing NSW Metro to secure the national title in their home state in Bendigo.

An explosive first quarter saw Vic Metro go out to a nine-point lead at quarter time, 28-19, and from there the home team were never threatened.

Instead, Vic Metro increased their pressure, and their defensive intent, to extend the lead in the second half.

Vic Metro kept NSW to just eight points in the third term to extend the margin to 28 at the final break.

The final quarter was party time for the home team as it went on to win by 40 points, 93-53.

In a team performance, five Vic Metro players scored double figures, with three recording double doubles in points and rebounds.

Ryda Devers led Victoria Metro’s points scorers with 19.

The win was Victoria Metro’s third straight title in under-16 boys.

Overall the team has now won 33 titles as Vic Metro in the competition’s history.

GIRLS GOLD MEDAL

Queensland South 83 d Victoria Metro 62

Queensland South has won their first Basketball Australia U16 national girls title since 2021 in with a dominant 83-62 win over Victoria Metro.

The star of the show was Olivia Olechnowicz who scored 44 points, including 21 in the second term which opened up the contest and gave Queensland South the win.

She was unstoppable, not only attacking the rim and causing headaches to the Victoria Metro defence, but also shooting plenty of threes.

It was the complete captain’s performance from the Queensland South shooter.

Victoria Metro were competitive in the first quarter and early in the second, leading at one stage by four points.

But when Olechnowicz started firing, Vic Metro struggled to keep up, as Queensland South took a nine-point lead into the main break.

From then on, South continued to dominate, doubling the lead in the second half to win comfortably in the end.

It was Queensland’s fifth title in under-16 girls.
