Victoria have firmed as favourites for the boys gold medal after a thrilling opening day at the Basketball Australia Under-20 and Ivor Burge National Championships.
The Victorians capped off a huge day on the show court at Ballarat with a dominant 91-51 win over reigning champions Western Australia.
The boys from the west had kept pace with their rivals over a big first half, heading to the main break down by eight points, but their depth was always going to be tested.

The Victorians exploded out of the break with a 32-13 third term as star duo Austin Rap (16 points, 13 rebounds) and Luke Fennell (18 points) went to work.
The win backed up the Victorian’s one-sided domination of Northern Territory to open the action on Tuesday.
All five starters hit double digits on the scoreboard, while both Rapp and Joel Foxwell hit double-doubles as the Victorians ran away with a 127-60 win.
It capped a huge opening day of action on the show court at Ballarat which also included big wins for Queensland and Victoria in the Under-20 Women’s tournament.

Australian junior representative Bonnie Deas was impressive off the bench for the Victorians finishing with a team-high 19 points and 11 rebounds as they cruised to a 87-70 win over the Western Australians.
It was a similar story for the Queenslanders, with lethal shooter Monique Bobongie shooting at 75 per cent from the floor to finish with a game-high 23 points in their 105-52 win over South Australia Blue.
The South Australians will be buoyed by the way they were able to move the ball down the timber, but will need to get a lock on their range after going 2-from-28 beyond the arc.
