After three days there are four girls sides with unblemished records at the Basketball Australia Under-18 and Junior Wheelchair National Championships.

Victoria Metro and Country, New South Wales Metro and SA Metro all maintained their brilliant unbeaten starts with victories on Tuesday.

The talent-ladened Victoria Metro shook off a defiant Tasmanian outfit for its 87-60 victory, while NSW Metro worked much harder for its 69-63 result against Western Australia Metro.

A lightening first quarter saw Victoria Country build an unassailable lead against the Australian Capital Territory on its way to a comfortable 86-58 outcome.

With commanding wins against Western Australia Country and NSW Country, and Tasmania its latest victim, Victoria Metro finds itself perfectly poised at the midway point.

The sheer magnitude of Victoria’s firepower was always going to be telling in an outstanding team performance.

Both Vic Metro’s Daisy Nousis (15 points) and Matilda Trout (13 points) were in superb touch and well supported by Sitaya Fagan, Madison Ryan and Sophie Richardson.

NSW Metro was made work extra hard for its six-point victory over WA Metro after the scores were locked at 30-all at halftime.

Rebecca Donnelly (21 points, nine rebounds) and Olivia Hastings (17 points, 12 rebounds) stood up in the third when the game was in the balance.

WA Metro’s Reece Anticevic (24 points, 10 rebounds) was a magnificent but needed more support.

Spare a thought for the resilience of the Northern Territory men, who suffered their third loss where the opposition has scored in excess of the 120 points.

But in a testament to their determination, they fought right out their latest defeat as they went down to the Australian Capital Territory 42-124.

It’s a daunting challenge for the smaller population bases to compete nationally, yet a tremendous learning curve and experience.

The huge victory was the ACT’s first of the tournament.

The South Australia Country men’s pairing of Kale Matthews-Hampton and Ethan Macdermot has monstered Tasmania in a scoring Blitzkrieg to register their team’s first win.

Tassie’s Jack Smith and Mason Ling also came to the party, joining in the basket feast as the four players remarkably scored a combined 116 of the 197 points in a 103-94 result.

Matthews-Hampton was in breathtaking touch as he powered his way to 38 points, along with eight rebounds and seven assists.

Macdermot chimed in with 27 points and seven rebounds of his own, while Tasmania’s Ling landed 27 points (eight rebounds) and Smith 24 (12 rebounds) in the entertaining contest.
