It promised the world, and it delivered even more.

Hometown heroes Queensland South have escaped with a much-needed win, and more importantly ended the unbeaten run of rivals Victoria Metro, in a two-point Wednesday night thriller.

But it is a come-from-behind 92-90 win that has also come at a cost for the home side after important big man Tyrell Mason had to be taken from the court in a wheelchair following an awkward landing in the first half.

In his absence, the stars truly shone bright for Queensland with Indy Cotton (28 points, five assists) and Ashley McGrath (18 points, three rebounds) pulling the strings.

Austin Foxwell, who was reminiscent of older brother Joel’s gold medal efforts at the Under-20 National Championships earlier this year, almost delivered an unlikely win with a late flurry.

But even his game-high personal haul of 26 points wasn’t enough to get them home.

Earlier on court two Western Australia Black Ducks made a stirring start to the Junior Wheelchair Championships as Cooper Spillane put up 23 points and 15 rebounds in a 50-43 win over NSW.

Victoria Country also made a mid-tournament statement with a 122-45 win over the Northern Territory.

The Victoria Country boys, who remain undefeated and destined for a table topping finish to the group stages, were simply unstoppable.

With their regular starting five on ice early, Lachlan Kanngiesser stepped up with a game-high 18 points while Alistair Smaniotto had a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double.

Well, it’s not as bad as it sounds, but it still may require a strong coffee or two.

The Vics have taken down NSW Country, SA Metro and WA Country in an impressive opening to the tournament, while the Queenslanders have been an offensive juggermaut.

And after waiting patiently all week, the Junior Wheelchair Championships kick into action - and for NSW fans, Court 2 provides quite a bonus.

They start of a big day of entertainment at 9am against last year’s runners up - and perennial strong performers - Western Australia. They then back up at 5pm in a repeat of last year’s third-place playoff against Queensland.

Two teams looking to open their win accounts follow the first game at 11am. WA Country and ACT haven’t been too far off the pace and look evenly matched.

The impressive Vic Country boys hit the floor at 1pm in a match they should comfortably pass the century mark in against Northern Territory while SA Country and Queensland North face off in an important clash at 3pm.

Every match of the Basketball Australia Under-18 and Junior Wheelchair National Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from April 7-14.
