Tiwi and the Buffaloes both impressed the crowds gathered for the AFLW Dreamtime curtain-raiser, but it was the silky skills of the Bombers which won the day.

The Bombers’ energy went up another level ahead of the Essendon vs Richmond face-off, the first top level women’s game to be played in the Northern Territory since 2019.

Darwin took the challenge to them, but the likes of Maria Rioli and Jamie Lee Puauatjimi led the way as Tiwi took the win 9.6 (60) to 4.6 (30).

The showcase of women’s footy in the Top End more than lived up to expectations with two exciting sides going at it.

The Bombers took charge early in the hot conditions with back-to-back goals from Puautjimi and Jessica Nannup.

Rioli was once again impresive coming out of the middle and linking up well with her forwards to put all manner of pressure on the Double Blues.

VFLW medal winner Dom Carbone, back playing for her junior club, popped up precisely where she was needed for the Buffettes, and her efforts kept them in the contest.

Tayla Hart-Aluni was another to show off her talent in the important fixture, while Molly Althouse got a couple crucial tap downs.

But Tiwi had done the early damage and used the full width of the field to their advantage, burning their rivals around the fringes as they made plays for goal.

Freda Puruntatameri was exciting on the attack as was Arthurina Moreen, while Courtney Ugle was a rock in defence for the Bombers.

The Buffettes had their own bit of Tiwi magic in Julianna Kerinaiua, who scored a goal early in the fourth period when the game was in the balance.

However, Rioli kicked a torpedo from beyond the 50 that bounded through and all-but sealed the deal.

Tiwi Bombers and Darwin Buffaloes women will be out to impress when they open the festivities for the return of AFLW footy to the Top End.

The Bombers come in as favourites with two wins to their name already this season, including their most recent against a strong Crocs outfit.

Maria Rioli and Ellie Kellock were among the standouts in the match-up last week and the Bombers are going from strength to strength off the back of the popular Tiwi Islands women’s competition.

The Buffettes have yet to get on the winners list this season, but that cann be partly put down to having played some of the top contenders.

Their best match remains their league opener in which they chased down reigning premiers PINT, and very nearly came away with the win.

Dom Carbone has been their standout when she’s played, but they will also be looking for energy from their other mainstays such as Molly Althouse, Bianca Stokes and Kylie Duggan.
