Southern Districts marked their skipper’s 200th game with a real thrashing of the Darwin Buffaloes, in which they extended their lead on top of the NTFL ladder.

The Crocs were always the favoured outfit coming in against the bottom placed side and it was only moments before they took charge of the occasion.

They dominated from their denying Buffaloes any real impact on the scoreboard on their way to a huge 34.7 (211) to 1.2 (8) victory, with nine goals from Steven Motlop.

The 203-point win was the perfect pre-break tonic for the club and memorable occasion for captain Michael Bowden in his 200th match for the Crocs.

A blistering nine goal first term by Districts where Motlop got the first inside a minute of the opening.

Coby Chapman snapped truly one minute later and when Motlop added another, the home side had three on the board after a mere five minutes of play.

Croc big man Wyatt Ryan continued to dominate the tap in the second and although Buffalo veteran Matt Campell was a terrier around the drop, the weight of numbers told, and Jed Anderson continued the scoring with an elegant goal for Districts.

The Double Blues simply couldn’t break the watertight Croc defence until big-Buffalo Will Irwin marked and ran through a goal at the 10-minute mark.

But when Motlop, Matt Shannon and 200-gamer Bowden all goaled, it further displayed the difference between the sides and the Crocs went to the long break holding a 100-point lead.

Mottlop began the second half as he did in the first with a goal in the opening minute – a further eight for the term by Districts essentially snuffed out any chance of a Buffaloes revival.

Eight goals to nil in the last and the double-blue misery was complete.

One happy participant in the game was Bowden who reached his 200-game milestone, and the premiership player is chasing the club games record holder Shane “Ice” Shewring who reached 250 before hanging up the boots.

“200 games means a lot to me – I’ve got my family sitting in one of the pockets and between them and what the club has done for me since I was about 16-years of age - so it means everything to me,” said an emotional Bowden.

“Today showcased what we are capable of, but we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves because Buffaloes are a developing club, and we must do all the hard things against more advanced teams.

“People say we have underachieved over the past few seasons, but we won’t be drawn into what could have been because that is not positive. We are happy with the group we’ve got to go forward, and it is the future we are more concerned about.”

Bowden is normally a dashing defender, but the coaches gave him some freedom up forward today and he finished with three goals.

“I got three today, but the boys set me up for two of them and really should be credited with one, but I will take them all,” he said.

“Also, I’ll get Shane Shewring – 200 for me today but Shane is at the top with 250 and I reckon I’ll get 251 and then retire.”

PREVIEW

It’s top v bottom and Southern Districts will be looking to pile the hurt on winless Darwin Buffaloes in the run-up to the Christmas break.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 4pm on Saturday.

The Crocs have the bottom two – Buffaloes and Palmerston – to come before the break and will want to take full advantage to maintain their percentage gap over St Mary’s.

Southern Districts bounced back from their first defeat of the season against St Mary’s to demolish Nightcliff last weekend.

There’s so much firepower in this Crocs outfit, with success flowing from every part of their set up.

The Buffaloes have struggled to find form this season and, besides two points earned from a cancelled game, have yet to make an impact on the table.

Their skipper, Jarrod Stokes, is still up there with the best in the competition – his three first quarter goals against St Mary’s proved that – but he needs support.

Watch the full replay at the end of the game.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
