Replay: Waratah v Southern Districts - NTFL Round 10

Southern Districts have finally had a taste of revenge with an incredibly gutsy victory over major rivals and reigning premiers Waratah.

The Crocs came in with a point to prove having lost to Waratah in last year’s grand final, and were further shown up in the opening round of this season.

Despite trailing early in the Round 10 encounter at Gardens Oval the Crocs came good in the second half winning 14.11 (95) to 13.8 (86).

Former GWS player Jarrod Brander got the match underway kicking the opening goal to give Districts the early lead.

However, their fortunes quickly changed as the Tah’s talismanic forward Jayden Magro kicked three in the term, helping his side to a healthy lead.

The Crocs got themselves back in the contest through their defensive efforts, namely Mackenzie Slee’s efforts limiting Magro and Matt Dennis’ excellent reads in the ruck battle.

However, the Crocs didn’t have it all their own way, Mitchell Burgess going down with a head-knock following an accidental collision, not to return for the remainder of the competition.

Following the stoppage, Crocs’ Jed Anderson and Brander showed their class, picking apart the Tah’s back line, pushing the point and pegging back the total to 66 a piece with the last to play.

The Districts boys who gritted their teeth, pulling out a memorable come-from-behind victory, with Michael Bowden’s goal after the buzzer the final dagger in the side for the reigning premiers.

“That was a tough game, and that was a really good win,” former Cat and Lion Nakia Cockatoo said.

“When you come up against a really strong side like Waratah, you need to put your best foot forward.

“We didn’t do that in the first, but we certainly dug in there and fought ourselves back into it.

“It’s nice to get a bit of revenge also.

“Having that willingness to fight for the footy and be first to it, that wins games.

“If we can sustain that for the four quarters, like any good team, we’ll break any side that we come up against.

“But credit to the Waratah boys, they’re a proper side, I’m sure we’ll see them in the finals.”

Preview

Southern Districts didn’t know what hit them the last time they faced Waratah.

The game was effectively over by halftime as the reigning premiers raced out to a 40-point lead. That they extended it to 88 points by fulltime showed their complete mastery.

The Crocs have been better since, much better in fact, and will be out to prove a point on Saturday in the rematch.

And the NT News and KommunityTV will be there to stream the entire match from 6.30pm.

After a couple of surprise defeats, Waratah are now riding a five-game winning streak and last weekend took down Nightcliff, despite kicking almost twice as many behinds as majors.

Their midfield is among the strongest in the league with Brodie Carroll and Scott Carlin among the form players in the comp, while former Sydney Swan Ryan Clarke has slotted in perfectly.

But much of their success depends on the use they can get out of their men up top in Jayden Magro and Anthony Munkara, who both have the ability to turn the game on its head.

The Districts v Waratah clash is certainly intriguing.
The Districts v Waratah clash is certainly intriguing.

Districts were left reeling after that heavy opening round defeat, but then went on a tear, rampaging through sides such as Darwin Buffaloes and Wanderers.

Jed Anderson has been one of the recruits of the season, and alongside Beau Schwarze and Matt Johnson is a constant danger man in the midfield.

Then there’s Jarrod Brander, who can easily kick a bag when he isn’t locked out of the game.

A full replay of the match will be posted here following the end of the match.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
