A young Southern Districts women’s side have all but ended the Tiwi Bombers shot at a first finals stint, coming out on top in a genuinely even tussle.

The Bombers needed to at least two wins from the final three rounds of competition to give themselves a chance of breaking the top five.

However, Districts who have had some recent scalps of their own, namely the Darwin Buffettes, came to play at Gardens Oval winning 7.5 (47) to 4.11 (35)

It was an opening period where Districts were more clinical with ball in hand that proved decisive, with Tiwi having plenty of it but unable to put on the finishing touch in front of goal.

Emma Forsyth, backing up recent representative honours, and Isabella Boyd played important roles across midfield giving their strike players, such as Cate Twaddle and Fleur Davies, plenty to work with.

Freda Puruntatameri and Rhiannon Busch were great down back for the Bombers whether on the intercept or rebound, and they were crucial to dragging their outfit into the contest.

However, x-factor star Maria Rioli was locked down for large periods of the match, and the Districts backline put on the pressure forcing wayward kicks from a side known for kicking screamers.

But with Districts keeping their noses in front by enough throughout the match it means the Bombers have to do it tough for the remainder of the season if they’re to play finals.

Tiwi Bombers are pushing for a potential first-ever finals prize, but they need to post a big score against Southern Districts to maintain the challenge - and also hope results go their way elsewhere.

The Tiwi Bombers impressed with a 9.9 (63) to 1.4 (10) win over the 2021-22 premiership winning Darwin Buffettes on the weekend, to suddenly give life to their finals hopes.

The likes of Sarah Darcy and Jamie Lee Puautjimi were among the side’s standouts, while Maria Rioli and Freda Puruntatameri capped off a week which included game time with the Essendon VFLW side.

They are now in a position to potentially nab fifth on the table by season’s end, but need certain results to go their way to let that happen, including here against seventh.

Districts also enjoyed a recent win over the Buffettes, and will be using that as a confidence booster for the remainder of their season.

Emma Forsyth, who represented the NTFL rep team, Michala Collins and Sarah Carbone have been among their standouts in recent weeks, and they will want to continue their good form against the Bombers.
