NTFL 2023-24: Watch Tiwi Bombers vs Palmerston women Round 12 livestream

A full strength Tiwi Bombers for the first time this season has pounced on the opportunity to stifle the Palmerston Magpies’ finals aspirations. Watch a full replay of how they did it.

The Tiwi Bombers women have shown plenty of spirit to surge late and take the win in a real thriller against the Palmerston Magpies.

Palmerston led the charge early on, but the exciting Bombers stayed in the contest and piled on the goals late to win 9.2 (56) to 7.4 (46).

It comes as the Bombers’ most significant win of the season, with their full side finally able to play following the end of the inaugural Tiwi Islands Football League women’s comp.

Palmerston came out the harder side using their pace to move the ball forward and, while the Tiwi defence held early, the Magpies eventually got a goal through Laquioya Cockatoo-Motlap.

Samara Puruntatameri added an extra soon after, while Marika Carlton was a constant danger playing out of midfield to put Palmerston in control.

Tiwi’s Maria Rioli took the game on in the second quarter, resulting in a goal for Laelia Dunn, which was a real breakthrough moment for the Bombers.

Dunn went on to kick two more, rewarding the Bombers for their efforts, while a Palmerston infringement gave Sarah Darcy an easy shot from the goal square.

Palmerston did have some responses with CAFL star Gabrielle King getting a couple on board, while MacKenzie Lynch was a standout in their defence.

But once Tiwi had a sniff of getting in touching distance they didn’t let go, with Rioli continuing to bring the pace, while captain Jamie Lee Puautjimi also goaled as part of a three-goal run.

The burst put them in front and while Palmerston rallied, including a goal for their own captain, Tatyana Perry, they weren’t able to close the gap.

The Palmerston women have a chance to stake a claim for finals footy, but their Tiwi rivals will be no pushovers coming out of the Christmas break.

For the Palmerston women this is a real chance to boost their rankings and keep themselves in touching distance of playing finals footy.

There’s been a marked improvement from the Magpies in the 2023-24 season as their young guns such as captain Tatyana Perry and Marika Carlton have made their mark.

And as a result they’ve pulled themselves into finals contention, as long as they can get a win against one of the sides above them.

Meanwhile, the Tiwi women have struggled a bit early in the season playing the inaugural TIFL women’s competition at the same time.

But with that season finishing prior to Christmas, the Bombers will be the sole focus for many of their big names which could mean an improved Tiwi coming out of the break.
