St Mary’s booted 10 fourth quarter goals to end any chance of a Tiwi Bombers fightback in their NTFL Round 7 face-off.
In the match originally slated for Wurrumiyanga Oval, but moved to Gardens Oval, St Mary’s showed their power late in the piece to win 22.14 (146) to 10.13 (73).
After winning the toss, Saints jumped out of the blocks in the opening quarter but were wasteful in front of goal and although the islanders were held goalless, they trailed by a mere 22-points at the break.
Up against taller opponents in Owen Conway and Korewha, Tiwi ruckman Karlson Kantilla won more than his share of taps but Dylan and Jack Landt together with Blake Cooke and Brodie Sowter ruled the ground ball and continually drove their team forward.
Tiwi booted the first three goals in the second including a goal-of-the-year contender by skipper Brendan Kantilla who, on the run, slammed home from 60m out. But Saints steadied and registered the next seven, including three from Calder, and went to the long break with a 44-point buffer.
The Bombers won the third kicking four goals to two but and although trailing by 32-points going into the last.
They were clearly tiring and had no chop-out for Kantilla in the ruck while the green team had plenty of options, including Korewha who dominated the bounces in the final quarter giving the Landt’s, Jack Kluske and Brodie Sowter an armchair ride to the goal mouth.
While Saints peppered the goals, the Bombers also had their moments but couldn’t pass an air-tight defence led by tall Darcy Chirgwin who cleaned up anything his teammates missed.
“Can’t complain about a seventy-point win and while we could have played better in parts of the first and third quarters, we knew they would have a crack, so we just had to stop their run which is pretty hard to do,” Chirgwin said after the game.
“This is my first season with Saints, and I got here through Harry Ling who played here last year. The footy is different and today was so bloody hot and we chased a lot but it’s enjoyable and winning is a good tonic especially with a percentage boost which may be crucial in the end.”

PREVIEW
St Mary’s return to action after a week off hoping the bye hasn’t interrupted their momentum.
After losing their opening match against Nightcliff, the Green Machine have put together four consecutive wins, the last two showcasing their undoubted attacking prowess.
On Saturday they face a potential danger side in the Tiwi Bombers.
And the NT News and KommunityTV will be there to stream every moment of the face-off from 2pm.
St Mary’s went into their bye round at the top of the table and now sit among a host of teams on 16 points after six rounds.
Two weeks ago they cruised past the century mark in defeating PINT, with their midfield contingent of Dylan Landt, Nate Paredes and Joel Garner proving themselves a real threat for any side.
Forward line targets Jackson Calder and Jack Landt are also danger men and could prove an issue if the ball keeps coming their way.
Tiwi Bombers, while undoubtedly improved in the 2023-24 season, have yet to post a win against one of the top sides.
But they have often been a side to catch the Green Machine by surprise, and will be hoping to again with the likes of Kim Kantilla able to burst out and post a score, even when nothing looks on.
A full replay of the match will be posted here following the game’s finish.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream both the Men’s and Women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
