St Mary’s continued their impressive form in the NTFL Women’s Premier League with a strong win against Palmerston.
In a game which had almost everything in terms of weather, the Saints took the lead early and then went on to grab a 8.5 (53) to 2.1 (13) success.
The Saints were down their leading goalkicker Emma Stark and experienced vice-captain Jemma Iacono, but still showed they are a force to be reckoned with.
The highly-disciplined side were quick to get the ball moving out of their midfield through the likes of Paula Pavic and captain Emily Forshaw - and the scores followed.
Ciaralii Parnell, Grace Senior and Johanna Gregory grabbed two goals each, while Billie Byers was a constant threat getting the ball forward.
Palmerston, though, were no pushovers and showed they are a side on the up, with captain Tatyana Perry putting in a ton of work and Ella Ward held her own in the ruck contest.
Defensively they were strong, too, with the experienced Natasha Medbury, playing at full back, preventing a likely Saints’ goal on more than one occasion.
And they were finally able to hit the scoring themselves in the third quarter when livewire Marika Carlton scored, followed by a Ward goal.
But their hopes of clawing the game back were put to bed in the final period as Saints kept to their structures and saw the game out with a couple of late majors.
PREVIEW
The St Mary’s women have a chance to further their finals ambitions on Saturday, but Palmerston have been a rising side this season and could provide a real shock.
And the NT News and KommunityTV will be there to stream every moment from 2pm.
St Mary’s have only dropped one game all year - a 21-point loss to leaders and reigning premiers PINT at the beginning of November - and will be eyeing this match as another chance to claim a top two berth.
They are a side full of talent and have scored more points than anyone else in the 2023-24 Women’s Premier League so far with 662.
Young gun Paula Pavic has been a consistently among their best while Emma Stark has scored 27 goals in just four appearances.
Palmerston may have been on the wrong side of hefty defeats in recent weeks, but they are still a much improved outfit compared to previous years.
Last year’s Rising Star winner, Tatyana Perry, has captained her side well while Marika Carlton is the excitement machine the Magpies have been looking for.
While the odds are against them, if Palmerston apply themselves for a full four quarters, they could well find themselves in the mix.
A full replay of the match will be posted here following the end of the game.
