Replay: PINT v Darwin Buffaloes - NTFL Round 10

PINT have strengthened their finals credentials after scoring a major coup against the Darwin Buffaloes in what was at times a heated encounter.

The Greenants came in with the memories of being run down last time they faced the Buffaloes, a match which set them back early in the season.

But this time around they were the side still scoring in the final term ultimately winning 12.10 (82) to 8.9 (57).

Buffaloes started with the urgency they’ve lacked at times early on this season, but despite multiple chances to Hassan Ahmat-Watkins and Blake Coleman failed to get the points.

Instead it was PINT who took advantage, moving swiftly out of their defensive end through Mitch Pulmer to provide Kyle Kirk the first goal of the day.

The Greenants got plenty of use out of former Carlton man Lochie O’Brien and Connor McDonald through the midfield, with both players popping up to give their side every advantage.

However, much like the Double Blues, the Greenants were also a little wasteful in front of goal early on.

And the Double Blues stayed in the contest as a result, with former North Melbourne listed player Phoenix Spicer showing a touch of class to clinch his side’s first goal.

The pain of a goal against was compounded for PINT when they lost James Bennett early on to a bad knee injury, forcing them to go down a rotation.

Skipper Jarrod Stokes and ball magnet Baxter Mensch tried to get things going for Buffs in the second quarter, and back to back goals saw them in the fray.

But they could never stave off PINT, who took full advantage of the Double Blues not manning up on loose players in the goal square and getting goals on the board as a result.

McDonald penciled in a best on performance showing up in just about every midfield contest and ensuring clean play didn’t go PINT’s way.

The Greenants showed signs of pressure late in the third chipping the ball between their back line to wait out the siren instead of allowing for a Buffaloes surge.

The Buffaloes did come in the final term with Nick Yarran forcing his way into the encounter, while Tanner Coulthard also racked up the possessions late.

But the work of Brad Ryan off half back or Matt Ryan and Nicholas Steele getting goals in response deflated the impact of Buffaloes and allowed PINT to keep their noses ahead all the way through.

“We’ve had a good three or four weeks on the track now, and to get a win against a team like that is great for us,” McDonald said.

“After the first round beating them was in the back of our mind, we let that one slip and we’ve definitely thought about it, so it’s good to get that win.

“It came down to sticking to our structures and putting together a four quarter effort, which we’ve struggled a bit with this season, but now we’re starting to play more consistent footy.

“We’re heading into the break earlier than other sides so we’ve just got to keep the fitness up and keep the fire so we can hopefully push further up the ladder after the break.”

Preview: PINT v Darwin Buffaloes

On a weekend of pivotal matches, the PINT v Darwin showdown shouldn’t be overlooked in the race for the finals.

With things so tight among the top six at the moment, defeat in this fixture at TIO Stadium between fifth and sixth will leave one of them playing catch up.

And the NT News and KommunityTV will be there to stream all the action from 6.30pm on Saturday.

The Buffaloes are coming off back-to-back losses for the first time this season, and know they need to right the ship soon if they’re going to feature come finals time.

Falling behind early has been a theme for the Double Blues this season, and they were punished for that flaw against both Waratah and St Mary’s.

However, they are also a side who know how to fight back, as they proved in their Round 1 success against PINT, and they have the players to keep thems in the battle.

The Greenants will have been thinking long and hard about that defeat back in October, knowing they had the game within their grasp for almost the entire four quarters.

And they will be doing everything in their power to make sure they don’t fall to a similar loss this time around.

Steven Motlop has been in great form of late, while the likes of Liam Holt-Fitz and Silver Yousif are dangermen in front of goal.

A full replays of the match will be posted here at the end of the game.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
