Darwin Buffettes have sprung right back into the NTFL Women’s Premier League finals fight after toppling third placed Waratah by 26 points.
The 2021-22 premiers had fallen out of the finals fight in recent weeks, but only two points behind Palmerston, they knew a win here would see them back into the top five.
And despite falling behind early on, they rallied hard from the second quarter to take the win 7.7 (49) to 3.5 (23).
Palmerston had lost 12.11 (83) to 3.0 (18) earlier in the day to give Buffaloes a shot at jumping back in, and the Double Blues took the opportunity with relish.
A depleted Waratah kicked the only two goals of the opening quarter, thanks to Hayley Finning, before Buffs got into the contest.
It was all the Buffettes after that with dual best and fairest winner Molly Althouse showing her talents, while Sophia Mauboy intercepted everything at fullback.
Amber Wunungmurra had one of her best games of the season, kicking two goals, while Nicole Schmitt also came to life with a brace of goals of her own.
The Buffettes just have one game left before finals against Saints, before they can confirm their spot among the finalists.
PREVIEW
Darwin Buffettes can put a difficult few weeks behind them if they manage to get past a formidable Waratah unit at TIO Stadium.
And the NT News and KommunityTV will be there to stream every moment of the face-off from 12.30pm on Saturday.
The 2021-22 women’s premiership-winning side have struggled since the Christmas break, dropping games against sides formerly below them such as Palmerston, Tiwi and Districts.
That run of matches saw them lose their spot in the top five to Palmerston, but they are only trail by half a game, meaning just one win will see them back in the knockouts.
But Waratah are in third place for a reason and have all the firepower to make this a difficult encounter for the Buffettes.
Kierra Zerafa, Ruby O’Dwyer and Madeline Jeans have been among the Tah’s better performers this season, and they will once again be looking to fire against the Buffs to secure their shot at the double chance.
A full replay of the match will be posted here at the end of the game.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
