A Darwin Buffaloes side full of new faces survived a tough, physical battle against a Palmerston side which showed plenty of fight at their home ground.
Buffaloes came into the match unbeaten and with a host of new players including the former Brisbane Lions trio of Mitch Robinson, Blake Coleman and Rhys Mathieson.
But despite what first appeared to be a disadvantage Palmerston stuck in all night, and only fell behind late to be defeated 15.13 (103) to 11.5 (71).
The Magpies had the early chances on the back of some aggressiveness in the midfield, and eventually, after a couple of misses, Lucas Edmonds had the opener.
The score put Buffaloes into action with skipper Jarrod Stokes getting the clearances, while Robinson kicked back-to-back long range efforts to put his side ahead.
Former St Mary’s player Nick Yarran was also busy for the Double Blue applying plenty of tackle pressure to match the intensity Palmerston had brought to the game.
And through their aggressiveness, driven by captain Phil Wills, the Magpies never went away with Edmonds scoring one of the goals of the match off a two-bounce effort out of midfield.
They did take a hit when Jonty Patrick came off injured early on, but still they chipped in with Joshua Patullo and Bailey Young scoring off turnovers and quick transition play.
For Buffaloes Coleman and Mathieson built their way into the contest and showed their class in the midfield, and that came to the fore as the game wore on.
The Double Blues broke free at the top of the third quarter with a run of five goals particularly from the boot of Hassan Ahmat-Watkins and Daniel Stafford.
And though Palmerston were still around it was a gap they weren’t able to overcome despite the best efforts of their small forward Edmonds, who was always on the lookout for an opportunity.
Robinson said the Magpies had made life difficult for his side with their physical game plan, but after eight weeks away out of action said it was good to come through without injury.
“It was really fun, the boys fought hard, and Palmerston were really tough, if they had come away with the win they would have deserved it,” Robinson said.
“We got sucked into their physical game and it turned into a frantic ping pong game as a result.
“We just had to pull our head in a little bit, control the game and not give away too many turnovers, because they were scoring goals off our turnovers.
“I promised the Lions boys a trip with shooting and fishing, and football to keep the fitness up, Rhys loves it and Blake is from up here, so it was good to give back to the club.”

They will add plenty of firepower to the Buffaloes who have won their opening two matches in an impressive start to the new season.
Palmerston won’t let the Buffs have it all their own way at Cazalys Arena.
The Magpies remain the only side in the competition without a win and have so far opted for a younger side than in previous years.
However, Ashton Hams and Phil Wills are experienced campaigners in the group and will be eager to make the match as close as possible on their home deck.
Full replays of the match will be posted here at the end of the game.
