The Nightcliff Tigers have leaped back on top of the NTFL ladder with their rate of delivery absolutely destroying a battling Palmerston outfit.
Playing in the Warren Berto Memorial match, in honour of the classy midfielder who played for both clubs, the Tigers proved how dangerous they can be with a dominant 18.17 (125) to 3.5 (23) win.
Palmerston tried to assert some authority early one, when the match had yet to break open, but the Nightcliff defence, led by returning skipper Ryan Nyhuis, let nothing through.
But it was the rate in which Tigers rebounded out of their backline, and especially through their midfield, which eventually broke Palmerston down.
Dual Nichols medal winner Brodie Filo was absolutely everywhere in the centre, and his forwards were given almost free reign in front of goal as a result.
Premier League debutant Jackson Grundy was the first to notch a major after a couple of shots went awry, and his effort was followed by goals from busy forwards Bailey Edwards and Brett Kennedy.
Palmerston sorely felt the loss of some of their onfield leaders with both captains Phil Wills and Jonty Patrick out alongside ball winner Ashton Hams.
And despite their constant efforts, particularly from former Rising Star winner Ryan Warfe, the young team were unable to come away with anything substantial.
Meanwhile, Nightcliff stuck in and got to celebrate goals from 12 different players, including young guns Calvin Peris-Chong and Taj Murray.
Filo got his chance to show off in front of goals as well booting from 40m out, while Cooper Dahms was another busy contributor who was able to show his class in front of goals.
Nyhuis said it was good to be back in the side after getting injured in Round 1, with the memorial game being something the group had rallied around during the week.
“It’s a good reminder for us that it’s just a game at the end of the day, and it’s important we get around and support each other,” he said.
“Unfortunately stuff happens, and you don’t know how long you’ll be playing with the group, we bonded over that and just wanted to show that we celebrate and care for each other.
“The focus for us was making our team make the best plays, and just celebrating the little things, it’s easy in big wins like that to start playing selfish footy so we really tried to stay level headed.
“I was raring to get back out there, it’s hard sitting on the sidelines, especially as captain, you want to be out there leading from the front so it was good to be back.
“We know we have some tough games coming up, so we have to keep playing as we did, this was a good step forward and we just need to keep up that momentum.”

Preview
Deposed from top spot last weekend, Nightcliff Tigers return from their bye round on Friday night to face a Palmerston Magpies side searching desperately for some form.
And the NT News and KommunityTV will be there to stream every moment of the match from 7pm.
The Tigers get to jumpstart a big weekend of NTFL action in front of their home crowd at Nightcliff Oval, the site of their only loss so far in the 2023-24 season, against PINT in Round 2.
Nightcliff will be determined to do their home fans proud and with the form of the likes of Michael Mummery, Brett Kennedy and Brodie Filo, they have the firepower to get the job done.
The return of captain Ryan Nyhuis will also play a massive role in the match as the Tigers bolster an already-powerful backline.
Palmerston, meanwhile, are the league strugglers so far and remain the only side without a win to their name.
They have managed bursts of excitement, but have struggled to turn those moments into results.
Full replays of the match will be posted here at the end of the game.
