A late surge from Southern Districts has snapped the Darwin Buffaloes unbeaten run, in a largely even encounter. Watch the full REPLAY of the blockbuster clash.

The rampaging Southern Districts have put the unbeaten Darwin Buffaloes to the sword, in a match which turned one-sided late in the day.

What was shaping as potentially one of the best matches of the season, was suddenly blown apart when Jarrod Brander and Jonathon Ross went to work on a second-half goal feast.

Brander finished with seven, including one on the final siren, while Ross, who notched up the touches, finished with four as the Crocs crusied home to win 19.13 (127) to 10.9 (69).

Fresh from blasting through their past two opponents — and kicking 44 goals in the process — the Crocs bounded out of the blocks determined to assert themselves.

But despite Southern Districts’ early glut of possession, it was the Buffaloes who kicked the last three goals of the first quarter to take a six-point lead.

Former AFL player Jarrod Brander levelled up proceedings with his second midway through the second quarter as both teams struggled to gain ascendancy.

Not be outdone, Buffaloes vice-captain Hassan Ahmat-Watkins posted his third goal minutes later to swing the back and forth encounter back in his side’s favour.

The Crocs went to the main break with a three-point lead as both team refused to yield in an exciting first half.

Southern Districts again held sway early in the third term, but goals to Nathan Stewart and two to Kokwam Niki flipped the game on its ear as the Buffaloes roared back.

But when Brander kicked his second for the term and fourth for the game, before former AFL footballer Jed Anderson fired one home after a free kick, the Crocs were back out to a 11-point lead at the final break.

And when Beau Schwarze ran into an open goalsquare before Brander kicked his fifth to put Crocs up 29 points midway through the final quarter, the Buffaloes were staring down their first defeat of the season.

Brander kicked another two and Ross bagged his fourth, his second for the quarter, to help close out a superb victory.

It’s second against fourth as the unbeaten Darwin Buffaloes hope the magic continues on Sunday against a rampaging Southern Districts outfit who just can’t stop kicking goals.

The Jarrod Stokes-captained Buffaloes have brushed aside PINT, Wanderers, Palmerston and Tiwi Bombers in a wonderful opening six weeks to the season.

From their usual performers to a long list of proven fly ins, there is plenty of talent on offer, including ball magnet Baxter Mensch, Tom Baulch and Mitch Robinson.

But Districts are sure to be their toughest challenge yet, with the Crocs blasting through their past two opponents – and kicking 44 goals in the process – to remind everyone just why they made last year’s grand final.

Ruck Matt Dennis is having a great season while a midfield full of talent, from Jed Anderson to Matthew Johnston, has put the rest of the competition on notice.
