St Mary’s delivered the knockout blow to Nightcliff’s 2022-23 NTFL season when they beat the Tigers by 35 points in Saturday’s first semi-final at TIO Stadium.
The Saints began in second gear when the scores were tied at quarter time, but their potent forward line turned on the power after that to win 13.8 (86) to 8.3 (51) and advance to next week’s preliminary final.
Midfielder Dylan Landt booted five goals in a best on ground display that skittled the Tigers.
“We put a lot of focus on them not getting the jump on us and putting us out of the game, the plan was to control the game and push o from there,’’ Landt said.
“It doesn’t really matter who we’re playing next, we think we’ve got the side to go all the way again, but for now we’ll just be focussing on our recovery.’’
The knockout final began with hardly a whimper when both sides kicked two goals in the opening term, Jack Hammond booting two for Nightcliff from set shots and Saints pair Landt and Jackson Calder responding for the reigning premier.
St Mary’s lifted the intensity in the second term with a six-goal burst that shot them to a 24-point lead, Landt and Calder kicking two more each to fire out some early morning signs to the Nightcliff defence.
Landt, Kieren Parnell and Matt Green were prominent at both ends of the ground and skipper Nathaniel Paredes around the ground became a big factor in the turnaround.
But any plans Saints fans had to break into some early celebrations were stalled by a fierce Nightcliff comeback in the third term.
Jay Moody, Hammond again and Butcher from a big mark over the pack kicked goals got the Tigers to within eight points at the last change.
Nightcliff missed the long kicking game of midfielder Brodie Filo, who was heavily tagged by Kieran Parnell and spent a lot of time on the interchange bench.
The third term provided plenty of fireworks for fans of both sides, Saints forward Jack Landt appearing to have his number taken after a clash with Nightcliff defenders and the normally calm Cameron Ilett giving away a 50 metre penalty at the centre bounce.
The game had several highlights, an assortment of big marks from players of both sides and intriguing matchups ensuring a tight contest where any mistake was usually punished on the scoreboard.
Most of the scoring was done at the PINT Club end of the ground, a swirling wind acting as a magnet for the football that both sides took advantage of.
St Mary’s continued their surge in the last quarter, Landt kicking two goals to reach five for the game and Calder benefitting fom teammates running down the ground by booting two majors of his own to also make it five for the match.

LIVESTREAM PREVIEW
Another chapter in the ongoing finals rivalry between St Mary’s and Nightcliff is about to be written with the sides set to meet in the elimination semi-final.
And the NT News will be there to livestream every minute of the action exclusively for you from 4.15pm, Saturday.
These two sides have been the trend setters in recent NTFL seasons meeting in both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 grand finals, both won by Nightcliff.
Then St Mary’s struck back last season beating the Tigers in the prelim final on their way to the premiership.
This season however, they meet a round earlier with survival once again on the line for both sides.
Saints were humbled by Waratah in the qualifying final, but there is talent aplenty in this side from the backline to the league’s leading goal scorer Jackson Calder.
Meanwhile, Nightcliff started the season rather grimly, but have since found their spark and are currently on a run of eight wins in a row.
One of those wins came in a tight affair against the Green Machine, and with Nightcliff’s current form they will be backing themselves to get the job done again.
If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream Men’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
