NTFL 2022-23: Watch Palmerston Magpies vs St Mary’s Round 16 livestream

St Mary’s have strengthened their grasp on the double chance with a win over Palmerston in the heavy rain. WATCH THE REPLAY.

Replay: NTFL Round 16 - Palmerston v St Mary's

St Mary’s strengthened their grasp on the finals double chance after absolutely dominating a hapless Palmerston in a rain stricken night at TIO Stadium.

The Green Machine needed a big showing, after dropping their Round 15 match to Nightcliff, and under heavy rain they got their response winning 20.16 (136) to 2.4 (16).

Palmerston put the pressure on early in the match with captain Eric Guthrie getting plenty of the action, while the big body of Ben Power was put to use.

But for all their efforts in those early minutes they came away with nothing and instead it was Saints on the switch who blew the game wide open.

The ball came through Brandyn Grenfell, who has proved his versatility in season 2022-23, and was soon in the Saints forward fifty with both Jackson Calder and Sam Fowler in space.

However, a Calder handball narrowly skittled between Fowler and the goal posts letting that chance go begging.

Instead it was Williamstown recruit Liam Hunt bursting out of the midfield who scored the first for St Mary’s as the heavens opened on TIO Stadium.

The Green Machine only improved from there with skipper Nate Paredes constantly finding himself with room, while Luke Hillier was also busy.

It was the Landt show in the third quarter with eldest brother Jack blowing the game wide open with explosives goals in the heavy weather.

And Dylan, who won the NT News player of the year in the 2020-21 season, once again showed why he’s so highly rated picking up possession after possession to move the ball forward.

Out of the backline it was fly-in star Lucas Jellyman-Turner who shone the brightest playing a key role in Saints transition game and preventing chances for the Magpies offence.

Palmerston’s only real consistent bright light was its backline with Ashton Hams a constant menace, while young gun Enrique Andrews did his bit to spoil the play for Saints.

Ryan Warfe, who initially had a man-up role on Saints skipper Paredes, and Rodney Nagawalli were also impressive over the distance.

But very little was created otherwise against a Saints side who were just too clinical in the wet, and were simply the better side in the crucial moments of the match.

Late on Dylan Landt continued to make it all look too easy picking up the possessions and getting some goals back on his older brother.

“It’s good to get a big win after last week’s disappointing loss, showed we could bounce back with a good win in the wet,” Jellyman-Turner said.

“It came down to controlling the game early and getting on top of them in the midfield and making sure everyone is playing their role.

“They were younger than what we played last time, but we knew before the game that would mean they would crack in hard and that’s what we saw.

“We’re just making sure we stay out of that fourth and fifth spot and stay in third or even chase second to keep the double chance.”

LIVESTREAM PREVIEW

St Mary’s can strengthen their grasp on the finals double chance if they beat the Palmerston Magpies at TIO Stadium in Round 16.

And the NT News will be there to livestream every minute of the game exclusively for you from 7pm, Saturday.

The reigning premiers will want to show what they’re made of this week, after falling in a scrappy affair to Nightcliff last round.

And the side that takes the field against the Magpies is sure to pack a punch with the return of Lucas Jellyman-Turner.

Meanwhile, Palmerston haven’t had a second half of the season to remember and now with a lot of their best players missing are perhaps only playing for pride.

But there is still some quality in this Magpies squad including Eric Guthrie, Ashton Hams, Josiah Farrer and a host of young guns coming through.

If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream Men’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
