It was a brutal blow for the Xavier High boys, who had been the form team of the competition, going through the round robin stages of the AFL NSW/ACT Junior Schools Cup finals undefeated.
That run included a big win over their grand final rivals, while St Mary MacKillop only scraped their way into the decider on percentages after losing two games in the round robin stage.
In the tier two finals, it was double delight for Hunter Sports High School who took out both the boys and girls grand finals.

At the other end of the field, there was no stopping the boys in green as they capped off the day with a 6.4 (40) to 1.4 (10) win in the decider.

PREVIEW
Bolstered by one of the biggest AFL school programs in Sydney, Waverley College is aiming high at the season-ending AFL NSW/ACT Junior State Cup finals on Tuesday.
Waverley AFL convenor Ben Shorthouse said there is plenty of talent in the squad.
“We’ve got quite a few boys in the academies,” Shorthouse said.
All 28 matches across four fields are set to be streamed LIVE and EXCLUSIVE from Tuggerah on KommunityTV, starting at 9:30am.
The school has revelled in the unbeaten run of their Year 9 and 10 boys team this year, and even though the Year 10s will be absent from this competition, their strength in depth has them primed for a big run.
“Clancy Walsh, Dominic Dametto, James Tucker and Oscar Griffith, they’re sort of our leading midfield players and they’ll be really important for us on the day,” Shorthouse said.
“One of our best players is Hayden McAusland, he played for NSWCIS at the national carnival this year and he’s a very strong player.”
Waverley will face Kildare College, Xavier High School and ACT school St Mary Mackillop College in the boys tier 1 finals.
AFL has really grown in popularity and skill at the school over the past few years and Shorthouse said it’s only going to get bigger.
“It’s growing and growing and getting stronger and stronger,” Shorthouse said.
“The program has significantly grown to the point where we are the biggest school in Sydney numbers wise.
“We have the most juniors registered in football as well and we’re looking to become the biggest and most powerful school in terms of success and numbers.”
